Bowling Green is buzzing with excitement as WKU Women’s Tennis star Sofia Blanco has been named the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second time this season! This fantastic announcement was made on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, and it adds another feather to the cap of this remarkable senior.

A Record-Setting Performance

Sofia Blanco has had an impressive season, racking up accolades left and right. This latest recognition marks the third time this season she has earned a weekly award, and it brings her career total to an astounding four weekly honors throughout her time with the Lady Toppers. She previously secured this honor earlier this season and was recognized with the CUSA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week title, along with teammate Rachel Hermanova, on March 5. It’s clear that Sofia knows how to shine on the court!

A Standout Senior Week

This momentous achievement comes at an especially poignant time: during Senior Week. WKU Women’s Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis expressed immense pride in Blanco’s accomplishments, and it’s easy to see why. As the team navigates the emotional waters of Senior Week, this award is another reminder of Sofia’s hard work and dedication.

Noteworthy Victories

Performing at the prestigious No. 2 singles position, Blanco recently clinched her team-leading 14th singles win of the year by triumphing over Liberty’s Daniella O’Neill in a tense match that ended with scores of 6-4, 7-5. This victory was not just another date on the calendar; it was the highlight of a record-setting season. With this win, Blanco now boasts a remarkable 54 singles victories and 104 combined singles and doubles wins, setting a new program record!

A Banner Year for WKU Women’s Tennis

The WKU Women’s Tennis program is making headlines, as it has achieved a total of four weekly awards this season—the highest number of weekly awards recorded in a single season since joining Conference USA. This is an astonishing double of the previous record! Besides Sofia, other awardees this season included talented players Emily Schut and Mia Miranda, who earned the title of CUSA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week on January 29.

Looking Ahead

As the season unfolds, the Lady Toppers currently boast a record of 13-9, and spirits are high as they head into the final two matches of the regular season. Fans won’t want to miss their exciting match-ups against Cambellsville on April 9, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. CT, and Alabama A&M the following day at 2:30 p.m. CT. The much-anticipated Senior Day ceremony will kick off at 1 p.m. CT before the match against Alabama A&M, celebrating the dedication and contributions of the seniors.
