Coach Greg Davis expressed excitement over new additions to the team and the strong performance of returning players. This season marks a significant continuation of success, with a total of 16 home matches lined up for the Lady Toppers, who aim to build on last season’s impressive record. Fans can look forward to an engaging and competitive season ahead.
Bowling Green, Kentucky, started the year off with a bang as the WKU Women’s Tennis team kicked off their 2025 season on January 16. Their highly anticipated home opener took place at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park, where they served up a smashing 6-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky. The atmosphere was buzzing as fans gathered to cheer on their beloved Lady Toppers.
The thrill of victory was palpable as WKU dominated the singles matches, finishing in the order of 6, 2, 5, 1, 4, and 3. The fans were treated to an impressive display of tennis skill and determination. The doubles matches also saw the Lady Toppers come alive, finishing in just two rounds at positions 1 and 2. It was clear that this team was ready to make a statement as they embarked on their season journey.
Head Coach Greg Davis delivered a burst of enthusiasm concerning the team’s hard work and preparation during the off-season. The addition of four new players brings fresh excitement to the squad, with new talents like Carolina Chiatti, Mia Miranda, Emily Schut, and Elizabeth Sobieski joining the roster. These new faces, paired with a strong lineup of returning key players like Sofia Blanco, Sunskrithi Damera, Rachel Hermanova, and Mariana Zegada, set the stage for an inspiring season ahead.
Last season, WKU wrapped up with an impressive record of 14-11, which tied them for the fourth most wins in a single season historically. Over the past three years, the Women’s Tennis program has recorded a staggering 47 victories, marking the most successful period in its history. The returning players bring a wealth of experience and skill, with seniors like Rachel Hermanova holding the record for career singles wins at WKU, currently sitting at an impressive 49 victories. Meanwhile, Sofia Blanco ranks third in career singles wins and second in doubles wins, pointing to a wealth of talent leading the team.
The match against Eastern Kentucky represents the beginning of an exciting 16-match home schedule for the Lady Toppers in 2025. Last season was particularly fruitful, as the team achieved 11 home wins, matching the second-highest single-season victory count in program history. The Lady Toppers even enjoyed an eight-match winning streak on home turf, providing an electrifying experience for the local fans.
Historically, WKU has faced off against EKU with a record of 7-11, and last year, EKU managed to edge out WKU with a narrow 4-3 victory in their season opener. However, WKU had previously won their three encounters before that, adding some extra spice to this rivalry. The 2025 matchup marked only the fourth meeting between these two teams in Bowling Green, making the atmosphere even more charged.
EKU, entering their season with a record of 9-18 last year, has its sights set on moving up as they were placed eighth in the ASUN’s 2025 Tennis Preseason Poll. Under Coach Adam Cohen, they return three of their top four singles players, making this matchup one to watch as the season progresses.
As the WKU Women’s Tennis team continues to build momentum, fans eagerly look forward to what this season has in store. With a mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent, the Lady Toppers are set on making their mark as they navigate through this competitive schedule.
