Do keep in mind that the gallery will close whenever WKU is not in session. So you’ll want to stop by and soak in the incredible sights of the bird kingdom before the exhibit wraps up!
This exhibit takes a closer look at the stunning yet vulnerable Torch River ecosystem located in northwest Michigan. Jessmore’s captivating photography aims to spotlight not only the breathtaking beauty of this area but also the pressing fragility it faces. Visitors will witness a selection from a work-in-progress documenting the environmental impacts caused by tourism and land overuse—a must-see for anyone concerned about our natural world.
Tim Broekema, a dedicated professor in WKU’s department of visual journalism and photography, is the curator behind this exhibit. Broekema has put together an experiential layout that immerses visitors in the challenges facing the Torch River, including an island design representing the shrinking habitats where birds must compete for space. It’s a thoughtful arrangement that invites viewers to reflect on the delicate balance between nature and human activity.
Jessmore’s journey as a photographer began during the COVID-19 pandemic when he took to the waters in a kayak to explore and capture the beauty of wildlife. Since then, his hobby has evolved into a meaningful advocacy project focused on the Torch River and its inhabitants. He has already made quite the splash in the photography world, having won first place in the Audubon bird photography contest not just once, but twice.
The larger project connected to this exhibit is tentatively titled “No Wake Zone”. This initiative aims to juxtapose serene wildlife scenes with the impacts of human encroachment. Jessmore’s commitment goes beyond showcasing stunning images; he actively engages with local conservation groups and authorities to inspire action for the protection of the river and its wildlife.
The “Birds Doing Stuff” exhibit is set to be an enlightening experience that speaks to anyone who cherishes wildlife and nature. It encourages visitors to appreciate the beauty of our ecosystem while also becoming aware of the challenges it faces. So, whether you’re a photographer, an environmentalist, or just curious about birds, this exhibit is the perfect way to spend a few hours celebrating our feathered friends!
Catch the buzz and be part of a movement advocating for bird and habitat protection. We can’t wait to see you there!
