Bowling Green celebrated the legacy of Gayle Harris Watkins by retiring her jersey during the Brent Chumbley Memorial Hilltopper Relays. The event honored her achievements and also showcased impressive performances from current athletes, leading to numerous personal bests. With upcoming competitions on the horizon, the Hilltoppers are poised for continued success in track and field.

Bowling Green Celebrates Track and Field Excellence!

On a bright and sunny day in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Western Kentucky University (WKU) rolled out the red carpet to honor one of its most legendary athletes, Gayle Harris Watkins. During the highly anticipated Brent Chumbley Memorial Hilltopper Relays on March 29, 2025, the university officially retired her jersey, celebrating her impressive athletic journey and achievements.

Honoring a Star

Gayle Harris Watkins shone brightly on the track, earning All-American honors back in 1979, and now her name will forever be remembered at the Charles M. Ruter Track and Field Complex. The event honored her incredible legacy and served as an inspiration for current and future Hilltopper athletes. What a fantastic way to remind everyone of the history and pride that accompanies being a part of WKU!

Across the Track: A Day of Achievements

Aside from the tribute to Watkins, the day was filled with exciting performances as six seniors were celebrated. These athletes included Alli Arnett, Kaison Barton, Nick Fornoff, Rachel Payne, Aitana Safont Falomir, and Luke Stegman. All of them showcased their talents while looking forward to new adventures beyond college.

Among the standout performances, LeAndre Bolen had a banner day, achieving a personal best of 48.77 meters in the men’s discus throw, bringing home a well-deserved second place. In an exciting turn of events, fellow competitor Luke Stegman clinched the top spot with a throw of 49.64 meters. The friendly rivalry between these two competitors certainly adds to the thrill of competition!

Meanwhile, Kennedy Coradini impressed the crowd with personal bests in both the discus throw (31.47 meters) and javelin throw (34.75 meters), securing second place in both events. Her dedication and hard work were evident, showing just how much effort she put into her performance!

In other standout results, JonJon Hunter soared in the men’s triple jump, reaching an impressive distance of 15 meters for the win, while Taurian Smith followed close behind. The women’s pole vault saw a fierce contest, with Sophia Roskoski emerging victorious. Not to be outdone, Natalie Papes also achieved a personal mark of 3.67 meters during her performance.

The track events brought their own excitement, with Kinley Kunkel racing ahead to win the women’s 1,500 meters and Tyler Pfefferkorn following suit with a win in the men’s 1,500 meters. Both athletes demonstrated exceptional speed and endurance that had spectators cheering loudly.

Trevor Hudnall also showcased his speed with a first-place finish in the men’s 800 meters, while Wade Balcom and Hollis Johnson placed close behind. Meanwhile, Arielle Phillips had a remarkable showing in the women’s 800 meters, setting her new personal best by finishing in 2 minutes and 27 seconds.

However, the big talk of the day came from Kameron Horton, who *sprinted* his way into history with a record-breaking time of 10.40 seconds in the men’s 100 meters. It was a moment for the books! On the women’s side, Haley Zell grabbed headlines, too, winning the 100 meters with a personal best of 12.26 seconds, while Jas Hampton also recorded her own personal best.

Madison Rabe took the spotlight in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a stunning time of 14.58 seconds, and she wasn’t alone in setting new personal records as Gianna Huerta joined the festivities as well. All in all, a whopping total of 10 Hilltoppers achieved personal bests during the meet, with 12 on the men’s side and four on the women’s.

What’s Next?

As the exciting day came to an end, WKU celebrated not only the past but also the bright future ahead. Next up, the Hilltoppers will compete at the Tennessee Invite on April 4-5, hosted by the University of Tennessee. With the momentum from the relays, everyone is eager to see what incredible feats these athletes will achieve next!
