Sponsor Our ArticlesPublic relations students at Western Kentucky University (WKU) are making a significant impact in Bowling Green by leading community service initiatives in partnership with local nonprofits. Their capstone projects focus on tangible experiences rather than traditional exams, fostering collaboration and engagement. From organizing fundraising events to raising awareness for community support campaigns, these students are enhancing the local culture of kindness while gaining valuable skills in PR and community outreach.
Bowling Green has become the epicenter of kindness and collaboration thanks to a group of enthusiastic public relations students from Western Kentucky University (WKU). These students are rolling up their sleeves and knee-deep in community service as part of their capstone projects, which focus on real-world experiences instead of traditional exams. Talk about making learning fun!
So what’s on the agenda, you ask? Well, these bright minds are teaming up with three local nonprofits: the Warren County Public Library (WCPL), WKU Film, and WKU Office of Sustainability. Not only are they gaining valuable skills in public relations, but they are also planning some awesome events aimed at making a difference in the Bowling Green community. Let’s dive into the details!
First up, a student team is organizing a fun-filled event at BG Skate on March 4 from 5 to 9 p.m. This thrilling evening promises great skating and community spirit, with 25% of the proceeds going to Good Deeds KY. This nonprofit works tirelessly to support unhoused individuals, provide transitional aid, and combat food shortages, with a special focus on helping veterans. It’s a perfect excuse to skate and support a fantastic cause at the same time!
The team isn’t stopping there. They are planning additional fundraising nights in collaboration with Blaze Pizza. Don’t forget to check out their Facebook and Instagram accounts, @thegooddeeds, to stay updated on all the exciting details and upcoming events!
Next, another group of students is shining a light on Life’s Better Together—a nonprofit dedicated to helping families facing financial hardships due to medical crises. Their “25on25” campaign encourages community members to donate $25 on the 25th of each month. It’s a simple but effective way to make a big impact. To kick off this worthy initiative, the group is hosting a tabling event on February 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the Downing Student Union. Swing by to learn more about how you can help families in need!
On February 25, there will be another exciting event, this time in partnership with the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society. The focus will be on raising awareness about pet spaying and neutering services, coinciding with World Spay and Neuter Day. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., students will host a tabling event, dispensing educational materials and information via QR codes. For those looking to be responsible pet owners, the Humane Society is offering discounted spaying and neutering for dogs and cats under 80 lbs, all thanks to funding from the BISSELL Pet Foundation. Woof-tastic!
Two other proactive students are on a mission to promote local library services. They’re teaming up with WKU’s Silent Book Club to create “Big Red Reads,” a community book discussion group. They’ll also be signing up students for library cards during their outreach efforts. Can you imagine diving into great literature while enjoying a sense of community?
Meanwhile, another duo focuses on the 30th WKU Film Festival. They’re inviting high school filmmakers to submit their work, creating connections between students and the university’s film department. To enhance participation, they’ll even produce a video advertisement and conduct a workshop for interested high schoolers. Lights, camera, action!
Lastly, a group of environmentally conscious students has planned a special event on February 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Centennial Mall. They will be promoting sustainable gifting practices just in time for Valentine’s Day. By repurposing donated t-shirts into tote bags, they hope to educate attendees while having fun. Be sure to follow their sustainability Instagram account, @wku_sustainability, for more tips on living green.
In summary, these public relations students at WKU are fully embracing their role as community changemakers. They are gaining invaluable practical experience and helping to make Bowling Green a better place for everyone. So, mark your calendars and get involved—together, we can make a difference!
