WKU Achieves Record High Retention and Graduation Rates!

Bowling Green, KY – Exciting news is buzzing around Western Kentucky University (WKU) following the recent Board of Regents meeting. The university has reported its highest retention and graduation rates in over a decade, and it has everyone talking! Let’s break down this fantastic achievement and what it means for students and the institution.

Retention Rates Soar!

This fall, WKU’s undergraduate students have maintained an impressive 85.7% retention rate from fall to spring. This marks a monumental milestone for the university, as it is the highest percentage since tracking began 15 years ago. Not only that, but the fall-to-fall retention rate peaked at 78.3%, which is also the best figure in WKU’s history! This increase is significant as it suggests that students feel more supported and are finding a sense of belonging on campus.

Graduation Rates Hit New Heights

But wait, there’s more! WKU’s six-year graduation rate has reached 57.9%, setting another institutional record. This shows that more students are not just staying enrolled but completing their degrees—a key factor for future opportunities and success. The strides they have made in enhancing student support are clearly paying off!

Support for All Students

Particularly noteworthy is the retention among low-income first-year students, which reached 73.4%. This is the highest rate since tracking this demographic began in 2011, highlighting WKU’s commitment to making education accessible to everyone. More than 91% of first-time, first-year students returned for the spring semester, marking a gain of 4.7 percentage points over the previous academic year. This improvement reinforces the effectiveness of the university’s strategies to support diverse groups of students.

Strategic Changes Boost Success

WKU President Tim Caboni spoke about how ensuring student success is critical. To help facilitate this, the university has made strategic changes in its admissions policy, including the decision to stop admitting students with GPAs below 2.0. This significant change is aimed at reducing levels of debt and boosting graduation rates—two factors that can greatly influence a student’s college experience and future.

Innovative Programs to the Rescue

To bolster this success, WKU has introduced new programs, such as the Summer Scholars Program and the ISEC Academy. These initiatives are designed to enhance student support, ensuring every student has the best chance possible to thrive in their educational journey. With approximately 93% of entering students receiving some form of financial aid, WKU is making strides in reducing the costs associated with higher education.

New Academic Offerings

User Experience as well as two undergraduate certificates: Business Fundamentals and Business Law. The new Bachelor’s program will focus on key design principles and technical development specifically for user-centered digital solutions, which aligns with current job market needs.

A Bright Future Ahead

Overall, WKU’s recent accomplishments in student retention and graduation rates reflect a vibrant and supportive educational environment. As these positive trends continue, students can look forward to a promising future filled with opportunities and success. With new programs and policies that focus on student success, it’s clear that WKU is on the right path.
