Exciting News for WKU Men’s Basketball Team as They Welcome New Player and Say Goodbye to Others
Bowling Green, Kentucky – The WKU men’s basketball team is making waves this week! The squad is officially welcoming Cam Haffner to their roster, after the talented guard made his commitment known via social media on a sunny Wednesday morning. Haffner, who stands 6’2″ and is currently a junior, is transferring from the Purple Aces of Evansville where he played for two seasons.
Last season, Haffner showcased his skills impressively, averaging 12.7 points per game and boasting a solid three-point shooting percentage of 36.7%. His numbers are noteworthy, but injury also played a significant role in his journey. Unfortunately, Haffner’s previous season took a hit due to a wrist injury he sustained on January 22, affecting his gameplay. Nevertheless, he has proven to be a formidable player, even earning the title of Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year during his time at Eastern Illinois before joining Evansville.
The Transfer Portal Drama
As the buzz around Haffner’s arrival makes headlines, the NCAA transfer portal has also brought a wave of changes for the WKU team. The portal opened its doors on March 24, and since then, several players have opted to seek new opportunities elsewhere.
The first to jump into the transfer frenzy was freshman guard Julius Thedford, making headlines on the very day the portal opened. He wasn’t alone, though—teammate Enoch Kalambay also announced his departure on the same day. Kalambay faced challenges of his own, as he was previously deemed unfit to travel or play due to physical and mental health issues. Despite these hurdles, he played 28 games during the season, making 14 starts and averaging 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
As if that wasn’t enough action, senior guard Don McHenry decided to explore new horizons on March 25. Known for his scoring prowess, McHenry has been a standout player for WKU over the last two seasons, even earning the title of Conference USA MVP in 2024. He averaged an impressive 17 points per game last season, placing him fifth in Conference USA.
The team also bid farewell to power forward Babacar Faye, who entered the portal on March 26 after averaging 15.2 points and 7.8 rebounds before his season-ending knee injury. It seems like the basketball carousel keeps spinning, as Tyrone Marshall Jr. and Fallou Diagne joined the transfer club on April 1. Marshall Jr., who has been with WKU for three years, saw action in all 32 games last season, contributing 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. On the other hand, Diagne faced a tough road due to injuries that sidelined him for last season.
Interestingly, several of the departing players, including McHenry, Kalambay, Marshall Jr., and Diagne, came from the junior college landscape and were recently granted an additional year of eligibility due to evolving NCAA regulations. This has opened the door for these athletes to explore new avenues within the sport.
