In a recent announcement, the Western Kentucky University (WKU) Libraries have been honored with the 2024 ALA/IIDA award for Outstanding Historic Renovation Project. The award acknowledges the success of The Commons at Helm Library project, which transformed the Helm Library into a vibrant, innovative hub for scholarship and creativity.
WKU’s project has been lauded as a harmonious blend of historical preservation and contemporary design. The renovation of Helm Library has been carefully curated to respect and retain the building’s rich history while incorporating elements that reflect the evolving needs of students today.
The goal was to create an encouraging space for idea creation, sharing and development, thereby cementing its role as the intellectual hub of the university community. Accordingly, The Commons has been envisioned to serve as a crucial part of the academic journey of students at WKU.
One of the significant contributors to this project’s success has been Susann de Vries, Dean of University Libraries. Possessing valuable experience in academic libraries and a Masters in Historic Preservation, she played an essential role in the transformation of the Helm Library.
Detailing her approach to the project, Susann said, “The Commons at Helm Library has been preserved and reborn to foster a vibrant and inclusive space of collaboration, innovation and academic excellence for many Hilltopper generations to come.”
The changing landscape of education strongly influences the designs of modern libraries. The need for spaces that encourage individual and collaborative learning is more prominent than ever. Brian Watson, design director at Gensler, attributes the success of The Commons at Helm Library to this very approach, further highlighting the changing expectations from academic spaces.
The introduction of social learning spaces and the provision for individual learning sessions have not only attracted the students but also served as a testament to the innovation and excellence in library design.
The ALA/IIDA Library Interior Design Award for Outstanding Historic Renovation Project is a recognition of the remarkable innovation and design excellence that The Commons at Helm Library stands for.
“While no one graduates from the library, no one graduates without the library,” phrases the university’s connection to its library. The Commons at Helm Library substantiates the enduring legacy of learning and community at WKU.
The success of the renovation project substantiates the power of combining historic preservation with modern design principles. It sets a precedent for future projects and affirms the integral role libraries can play in molding young minds.
The transformation of Helm Library into The Commons is more than just a physical renovation project. It signifies the potential of university spaces in fostering intellectual growth, endorsing the essence of scholarship, and promoting the spirit of creativity.
