Students are swapping traditional exams for promotional campaigns targeting local nonprofits like Good Deeds KY, Life’s Better Together, and the Warren County Public Library. Through these initiatives, students are honing their public relations skills while making a meaningful impact on their community.
Bowling Green, KY – If you’re in Bowling Green, you might want to keep your eyes open for some exciting events popping up soon! The students over at Western Kentucky University (WKU) are pulling out all the stops to engage with the community and support local nonprofits through their amazing fundraising initiatives. This isn’t just any school project; these students are making a real difference!
As part of their capstone projects this year, students from WKU are swapping traditional exams for promotional campaigns and events targeted at three lucky nonprofits: the Warren County Public Library, WKU Film, and the Office of Sustainability. Their instructor, Steve Momorella, is cheering them on from the sidelines, emphasizing how impactful these projects are—both for the students and for the community.
First up on the schedule is a special fundraising event on March 4, from 5 to 9 p.m., at BG Skate. The students are teaming up with the nonprofit Good Deeds KY for this fantastic evening. They’ll be donating 25% of the proceeds from skate rentals to this incredible organization, which is all about assisting unhoused individuals and providing support for veterans. The students are also planning more fundraising nights with popular places like Blaze Pizza, so keep an eye on social media for updates!
Another motivated student team is getting the word out for Life’s Better Together. This nonprofit lends a helping hand to families who are facing financial struggles due to medical crises. Their campaign called “25on25” aims to encourage people to sign up for monthly donations, providing ongoing support for families in need. This group will host a few exciting activities, including a tabling event on February 18, at 1:30 p.m. in the Downing Student Union.
But that’s not all—on February 25, students will be kicking off an awareness event with the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society in celebration of World Spay and Neuter Day. Join them in the Downing Student Union from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. And yes, there may even be some adorable puppy visitors! They’ll be using QR codes to point attendees to related services the Humane Society offers.
Turning to literacy, another group of students is joining forces with the Warren County Public Library (WCPL) to promote their fabulous services. They’re working hand in hand with WKU’s Silent Book Club, and they’ve even created a community reading group called “Big Red Reads”. Check it out to engage with fellow bookworms and share your favorite reads!
For film buffs, two students are amping up excitement around WKU’s 30th Film Festival. They have great plans to set up video advertisements and even offer workshops at local high schools to inspire the next generation of filmmakers. How cool is that?
On the sustainability front, two dedicated students are tackling waste management issues alongside the WKU Office of Sustainability. They’re setting up a tabling event on February 12, at Centennial Mall. Visitors can snag tote bags made from repurposed t-shirts and learn more about environmentally friendly practices. The sustainability efforts will also be promoted on social media through the Instagram account @wku_sustainability.
So there you have it—WKU students are combining their coursework with a generous dash of community spirit. These projects not only sharpen their public relations skills, but also bring meaningful support to the Bowling Green community. With so much to look forward to, be sure to join in and help support these wonderful initiatives!
