WKU Feminist Student Union Launches Annual Drive to Collect Period Products

Bowling Green:

For the third consecutive year, the Feminist Student Union at Western Kentucky University (WKU) is launching a drive to collect period products and personal hygiene items in honor of Women’s History Month. The campaign will last throughout March, with all donations going to the Barren River Area Safe Space, a Bowling Green-based organization dedicated to aiding those affected by domestic violence.

Feminist Student Union Advocates for Women’s Comfort

Aside from menstrual hygiene products, the drive also aims to collect personal care items, such as shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant, as well as individually wrapped snacks or candies. Ariel Powers, a senior communication studies major and vice president of the Feminist Student Union, informed that for the first time, they are also welcoming donations of new or gently worn clothing, in an effort to provide local women comforts typically taken for granted.

“This year we are asking for new or gently used sweatpants, hoodies, t-shirts, anything that makes you feel comfortable,” Powers said. “Many women living in shelters have access to interview clothes, but they often lack clothing that provides everyday comfort.”

Donation Details and Events

Monetary and physical donations can be made in various methods. For cash contributions, supporters can send their donations via Venmo to the Feminist Student Union’s treasurer. Physical donations, including period products, personal hygiene items, and clothing can be dropped off at a designated donation box located inside DSU or handed in during Feminist Student Union’s events scheduled on campus this month.

Marking the occasion, the Feminist Student Union will be organizing a yoga event on March 13 at 4:30 p.m., followed by a painting night at DSU on March 27, also at 4:30 p.m. Sororities interested in contributing can earn service hours in exchange for product or monetary donations, a recent development by the Feminist Student Union in hopes of attracting more participants for the drive.
