Bowling Green, KY – As the holiday season approaches, the Western Kentucky University (WKU) football program is buzzing with activity, and it doesn’t look like it will slow down anytime soon. The Hilltoppers have recently seen a whirlwind of changes in their roster, with players making commitments to new schools and adding new talent to their lineup. Things are definitely heating up in the world of WKU football!
On Monday, the Hilltoppers received word that their redshirt sophomore starting quarterback, Caden Veltkamp, has decided to transfer to Florida Atlantic University (FAU). This move is particularly interesting considering that the FAU Owls are now coached by Zach Kittley, formerly WKU’s offensive coordinator. Kittley, who led the Hilltoppers’ offense during a record-breaking passing season in 2021, just accepted the head coaching position at FAU earlier this month.
Veltkamp’s journey to this decision has been quite the adventure. He joined the Hilltoppers after being recruited by Kittley and had an impressive showing toward the end of the last season. He stepped up in the Famous Toastery Bowl against Old Dominion, throwing for over 380 yards and five touchdowns, leading WKU to an incredible comeback victory. With a remarkable performance like that, it’s no wonder he caught the attention of FAU.
Veltkamp isn’t alone in this transition. Just hours after his commitment was announced, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Easton Messer also declared his intent to join the Owls. Messer had a breakout year for WKU, solidifying himself as a trusted target for Veltkamp.
Originally a walk-on from Louisville, Messer showcased his skills during his time with the Hilltoppers, wrapping up the season with an impressive 55 catches for nearly 800 yards. Now, as the Hilltoppers cope with their changes, it’s evident that both Veltkamp and Messer are excited to start this new chapter together at Florida Atlantic.
In addition to Veltkamp and Messer, WKU is also parting ways with other key players. Redshirt sophomore kicker Lucas Carneiro, who became a valuable asset for the team, has made his commitment to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). Carneiro had a stellar season, breaking records for consecutive field goals and showcasing his talent by hitting six kicks from over 50 yards.
Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers are also dealing with a bit of coaching turnover. Tyson Summers, the beloved defensive coordinator who led the WKU defense during its impressive moments, has been hired by Colorado State in the same role. Summers expressed excitement about returning to Colorado State—he’d previously held that position back in 2015.
With all the departures, WKU is also focusing on rebuilding their roster. Recently, the team has secured commitments from several new players. Offensive lineman Branden Hollis and Max Thurston, both coming from junior college programs, are set to bolster WKU’s offensive line. Meanwhile, they also received a commitment from BYU transfer wide receiver Kody Epps, who brings significant skills and experience to the field.
In a time of transition, WKU football is working hard to build up their team for the future. As we enter the New Year, fans will be eagerly watching how these changes unfold and how the new recruits assimilate into the team’s culture.
As we look to the future, there are bound to be more surprises ahead for the Hilltoppers. With over 20 players still navigating the NCAA transfer portal, the team can expect more shifts before the deadline on December 28. It’s a busy time, indeed!
While the holiday season may be a time for celebrating, for WKU football, it appears to be a time for significant transformations. There’s never a dull moment, and fans are sure to stay glued to their screens for updates on this ever-evolving team!
