Both Brown and Merritt were formerly in charge of vital areas of WKU’s defense. Brown was the Defensive Backs Coach, and Merritt took the reins of the Inside Linebackers. Their collaborative efforts played a significant role in WKU reaching its fifth and sixth consecutive bowl games, culminating in an exciting appearance at the 2024 Conference USA Championship Game.

Last season, WKU’s defensive performance was nothing short of impressive, ranking fourth in Conference USA in scoring defense, allowing an average of 24.6 points per game. This ranking improved even more against conference opponents, where they limited opponents to just 20.1 points on average. The Hilltoppers also showcased their skills in pass defense, finishing second in the league, surrendering only 176.1 yards per game, and making it a tough outing for opposing quarterbacks by holding them to under 100 passing yards on four occasions.
