In a thrilling matchup this weekend, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are heading to town for a noon kickoff against the Eagles. With a current record of 3-1 on the season, the Hilltoppers come hot off a nail-biting comeback win over Toledo just a few days ago. Their only loss this year was a tough one, with a 63-0 defeat against Alabama in week one. But now, it’s game time, and fans are buzzing with anticipation!
Even though former Hilltopper Kye Robichaux won’t be taking the field for the Eagles, all eyes will be on his old team as they prepare for this exciting clash. One name to watch is redshirt sophomore Caden Veltkamp, who has stepped up as the starting quarterback after coming off the bench early this season. Standing tall at 6 feet 6 inches, Veltkamp has shown himself to be quite the physical runner.
After showcasing heroics during a bowl victory last year, Veltkamp was recently named the CUSA Offensive Player of the Week. In last week’s game against a solid Toledo squad, he helped lead a comeback in the fourth quarter, finishing with 242 yards on 20/30 passing, plus one touchdown through the air and two rushing touchdowns. However, he also had some moments to learn from, as his gunslinger mentality cost the team with two interceptions and a fumble that almost turned the game in Toledo’s favor.
While the WKU offense has been getting some air time—ranking 20th in the nation in passing yards—it’s been a bit of a struggle on the ground. The run game has averaged a modest 2.4 yards per carry, and while their offensive line has done a commendable job with just one sack allowed per game, Veltkamp’s rushing efforts have primarily carried the ground game. Leading rusher Elijah Young has yet to break the 500-yard mark after four games, but he’s known for making things happen when given the chance.
Let’s not forget about the receiving corps, where Kisean Johnson, a senior who transferred in from Alabama State, has been a standout, racking up 336 yards and three touchdowns. Alongside him, speedy teammate Easton Messer adds depth and playmaking ability.
Switching gears to the other side of the ball, WKU’s defense might just be the unsung hero of their season. Against high-flying Toledo, they demonstrated a “bend-but-don’t-break” mentality, stopping crucial drives and showcasing their fourth-best red zone defense in the nation with a 53% efficiency. Defensive back Devonte Mathews has made some critical plays, including two interceptions in the final moments of the game against the Rockets. The team also boasts an impressive top-10 ranking in fumbles recovered, showing they can capitalize on opponents’ mistakes.
Although the defense is still fine-tuning their performance on third down, allowing conversions 10 out of 18 times in recent games, they are looking for improvements as they head into this match. With a number of transfers in the secondary and depth along the defensive line, fans are excited to see how they handle the Eagles’ passing attack.
A quick note on special teams—punter Cole Maynard has been smashing the ball, averaging nearly 50 yards per punt. He and the coverage unit have shown their capability to flip the field, even helping to set up a safety against Toledo. It’s clear that Maynard is making his mark on the season!
As Eastern Kentucky faces the Hilltoppers this weekend, they can’t afford to take the game lightly. Western Kentucky has earned a reputation for taking down several Power 5 teams in recent years. With hopes riding high, both teams are eager to add another victory to their records, and fans are encouraged to join in the excitement! Settle in for an entertaining and intense showdown!
