Western Kentucky University football coach Tyson Helton has signed a new four-year contract ensuring his position until at least 2028. Though the official announcement is pending, Helton has led the Hilltoppers to a 48-32 record over six seasons, featuring consistent bowl game appearances. As player movements unfold, including NFL Draft declarations and incoming transfers, the program is aiming for a strong resurgence in the upcoming season. Fans are filled with optimism as the team looks to build upon past successes.
Bowling Green, Kentucky – Western Kentucky University (WKU) fans have reason to celebrate as head football coach Tyson Helton has signed a shiny new four-year contract, securing his position with the team through the 2028 season. The news, confirmed by a trusted source, had WKU supporters buzzing on December 28, 2024, although the university is yet to make an official announcement.
Wrapping up his sixth season at the helm, Helton has guided the Hilltoppers to an impressive overall record of 48 wins and 32 losses since stepping into the role in 2019. During this time, the team has consistently shown promise, competing fiercely in the Conference USA Championship game not once, but twice! They came up just short in 2021, losing a nail-biter to UTSA (49-41) and again in December 2024, where they faced Jacksonville State and lost 52-12.
Even with those championship setbacks, Helton kept spirits high by leading the team to bowl games each year, continuing that streak in 2024. Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers fell short in the Boca Raton Bowl, losing to James Madison 27-17 on December 18, thus bringing an end to their three-game bowl-winning streak. However, the coach maintains a solid 4-2 record in bowl games during his tenure.
As the dust settles on the 2024 season, several significant player movements are on the horizon. One of the standout stories is that of offensive tackle Marshall Jackson. Initially entering the NCAA transfer portal, he decided to return to WKU, where he had an impressive 2024 season and was named to the All-CUSA second-team. This is great news for the Hilltoppers, as Jackson has made his mark in 38 games for the team.
However, not all news is as promising. Redshirt senior linebacker Kylan Guidry has announced plans to transfer out of WKU after a respectable season, where he racked up 45 tackles, including seven for a loss. Just a year prior, he led the team with 54 tackles and will surely be missed.
In an intriguing twist, seven players have declared for the NFL Draft, including redshirt senior wide receiver Dalvin Smith and linebacker Sebastian Benjamin. Smith was a remarkable talent during his time at WKU, finishing with 131 career catches for an impressive 1,571 yards and 21 touchdowns. His production in crucial games, notably bowl appearances, certainly raised his stock. On the other hand, Benjamin dominated games as well, showcasing his skills with 53 tackles during the most recent season after transferring from Saint Francis.
The Hilltoppers are also bolstering their roster with several new additions. They recently welcomed Central Michigan transfer offensive tackle Jemeil Jackson, a former starter who has battled injuries, and Florida State transfer tight end Jackson West, who is recognized for his prowess on special teams. Another exciting addition is former Kentucky kicker Jackson Smith, who aims to shine for WKU as he seeks more opportunities as a specialist.
As WKU football gears up for a new chapter under Coach Helton, fans can look forward to another thrilling season, filled with potential and talent. With new players joining alongside returning stars, the Hilltoppers aim to build upon the successes of the past while striving for greater achievements in the future. With Helton at the helm, optimism is high, and the team is ready to take on whatever challenges lie ahead!
