Exciting news is rippling through Glasgow as a remarkable group of 84 talented students from seven local high schools has been selected for the Western Kentucky University (WKU) Glasgow Early College Class of 2027. These students are gearing up to embark on an educational adventure that will blend high school with the thrilling world of college courses.
Starting their journey during their junior year, these students will dive into an academic atmosphere unlike any other. They will be studying alongside not only fellow program participants but also WKU students and senior peers. The aim? To earn up to 30 college credits before they even graduate from high school! Can you imagine getting a head start on your college education while still enjoying those high school moments?
This initiative was announced at WKU’s recent anniversary celebration, where the university’s President emphasized the importance of giving students the “right start” in their educational journey. By choosing this path, students can maximize both Kentucky dual credit opportunities and essential work-ready scholarships.
The Early College program has quickly gained momentum. After starting with its first group of students in 2023, it is gearing up for its third year, welcoming an impressive 153 students slated to participate in the upcoming Fall 2025/Spring 2026 sessions. This growth clearly indicates that more and more students are eager to embrace higher education while still in high school.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Early College Program is that students can choose courses aligned with their Professional Career Tracks. This tailored approach allows them to explore passions that may shape their futures. Students are grouped into several fields of study, such as:
Derick Strode, the Director of Regional Campuses and Dual Credit at WKU, has expressed immense pride in welcoming this new cohort. He has reiterated that the selection process highlights not only academic performance but also maturity and readiness for college-level coursework.
