Michael Boos has made a significant donation to support WKU students as well as the Department of Military Leadership and Science.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service

During his tenure at WKU from 2020 to 2023, Boos served as an assistant professor of military science, dedicating his time to mentor WKU ROTC cadets. He truly enjoyed his experience at WKU, both as a student and an instructor, and he earned a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership while balancing his role as a major. It’s clear he has a passion for nurturing future leaders!

Supporting the Next Generation

Boos’ donation will support the Bud Sydnor Fund for Excellence, which provides unrestricted financial support for the Department of Military Leadership and Science. This is a significant boost for the department and will aid in ensuring that cadets receive top-notch education and training opportunities. To commemorate this generous gift, WKU plans to name a special space—the “Lieutenant Colonel Michael R. Boos Room of Requirement”—in E.A. Diddle Arena.

Scholarships for Aspiring Aviation Cadets

LTC Michael R. Boos Aviation Excellence Award Fund. This fund is aimed at providing scholarships specifically for WKU ROTC cadets who aspire to pursue a career in aviation within the U.S. Army. It’s a fantastic opportunity for cadets, helping to ease financial burdens as they take their first steps into the aviation world. This is especially important as they begin training and education programs.

From Mechanic to Military Pilot

Boos has an impressive background. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2003 as a helicopter mechanic and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Justice from Central Washington University. After commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 2008, he became a Chinook helicopter pilot just two years later. His journey includes a deployment to Afghanistan from 2016 to 2017, where he took on the pivotal role of a Company Commander, overseeing more than 32 soldiers and their flight systems.

A Continued Commitment to Service

Following his deployment experience, Boos transitioned into the role of a Battalion Operations Officer before joining the faculty at WKU. Today, he serves as the Deputy Operations Officer at the Army Reserve Aviation Command in Fort Knox, Kentucky. His work involves planning, coordinating, and resourcing various operational and training requirements for the command, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Honor and Recognition for Boos

Boos doesn’t just fly helicopters; he also pilots military King Air fixed-wing aircraft for VIP transportation within the Army. His dedication and commitment to service have not gone unnoticed. Recognized for his leadership qualities, he is highly regarded within the military community.

The chair of the Department of Military Science commended Boos for his leadership and caring nature, noting that his generosity enhances the educational experiences of cadets. The dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Boos as a positive force in both military service and in his ongoing support of current WKU students.
