Bowling Green, KY — The WKU community is mourning the loss of Heather Strode, a dedicated former associate professor of communication at Western Kentucky University. Strode, who was known for her unwavering support and kindness, sadly passed away in her sleep on the morning of January 2. She was just 54 years old. The Warren County Chief Deputy Coroner confirmed that she died of natural causes, leaving behind many friends, family members, and students who will deeply miss her.

A Lifelong Connection to WKU

Strode’s journey with WKU began when she graduated from the university in 1995. She took on her first role at WKU in 1999, working as the leadership and volunteerism coordinator within the Department of Student Activities. It wasn’t long before she transitioned into the communication department in August 2002, where she would spend the next 22 years shaping the futures of countless students.

A Mentor and Advisor

In addition to her teaching duties, Strode was also a significant figure within the Kappa Delta Sorority, serving as their advisor. Her hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, as she was awarded the Randy Bracey Outstanding Advisor Award in April 2022—an honor that recognized her substantial contributions to the sorority and its members.

The outpouring of love and support for Strode from the WKU community is evident in the plans to celebrate her life. A visitation is set to take place on Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapel’s Lovers Lane location. For those wishing to pay their respects, another visitation will occur on Monday at Broadway United Methodist Church from 9 to 11 a.m., leading into a funeral service.

In a heartfelt gesture that reflects Strode’s lasting impact, the Kappa Delta Sorority will hold a candlelight vigil at their house on Sunday, January 5, at 7 p.m. This gathering will allow friends, family, and students to come together to celebrate the life of a woman who brought so much joy and guidance to their lives.
