Pitcher Drew Whalen’s exceptional performance kept Kennesaw scoreless, while the offense delivered crucial home runs. The win equalized the series at 1-1 in Conference USA, setting the stage for an exciting deciding game.
Marietta, Georgia – In a thrilling turn of events, the Western Kentucky University (WKU) baseball team managed to bounce back from an earlier defeat against Kennesaw State, sealing a convincing 4-1 victory in the second game of the series on March 22, 2025. After the nail-biting opener, where they lost a heartbreaker 9-8, the Hilltoppers were determined to show their mettle.
The first game was fraught with challenges for WKU, who fell behind early after Kennesaw State scored first thanks to an RBI single in the first inning. To make matters worse, a misstep from the Hilltopper defense allowed an additional run to cross home plate. This error wasn’t just costly on the scoreboard; it set the tone for what became a tense battle. After suffering that defeat, WKU’s overall record slipped to 20-2 with their Conference USA (CUSA) standing at 0-1.
Moving on to the second matchup the same day, WKU came out swinging and determined to turn the tide. The title of this game? A true pitcher’s duel. Starting pitcher Drew Whalen was nothing short of spectacular, earning his fifth win of the season and boasting a perfect 5-0 record. Whalen dominated the mound, hurling an impressive 5 2/3 innings while keeping Kennesaw State completely scoreless. His stat line read three hits, four walks, and six strikeouts.
Relief pitchers Treyson Peters and Evan Jones also made significant contributions. Peters held the line with two scoreless innings, recording two strikeouts, while Jones secured his fourth save of the season.
WKU’s offense came alive, scoring a total of four runs on six hits and drawing five walks. The fireworks began early when Ryan Wideman smacked a solo home run in the first inning, marking his sixth homer of the year. Fast forward to the sixth inning, and Ethan Lizama got in on the action too, launching his fifth home run and the 14th of his career. These power hits set an energetic tone for the game that the fans were sure to remember.
Sending more cheers ringing through the stands, Carlos Vasquez added an RBI in the eighth inning with a well-placed hit through the left side. Not content with just a three-run lead, WKU iced the cake with another run in the top of the ninth—Dylan O’Connell took advantage of a wild pitch to score, adding a layer of comfort to the team’s cushion.
While Kennesaw State managed to score a single run in the ninth with an RBI single, it wasn’t enough to change the outcome. The final score registered as WKU 4, Kennesaw State 1, ensuring that both teams would head into the deciding game of the series with a record of 1-1 in CUSA.
Fans could hardly wait for the finale, scheduled for March 23, 2025, at noon CT. With momentum on their side, WKU is fired up and ready to secure the series in this exciting matchup!
