The Hilltoppers showcased their talents, extending their perfect home record to 18-0 while achieving the second-longest winning streak in program history. Coach Marc Rardin emphasizes hard work and humility, as the team gears up for challenges ahead. Fans are excitedly anticipating the next games against Eastern Kentucky and Kennesaw State.
The atmosphere in Bowling Green is buzzing, and it’s all thanks to the Western Kentucky University (WKU) baseball team, which has just extended its winning streak to a fabulous 14 games. On March 16, 2025, the Hilltoppers showcased their skills at Nick Denes Field, marking a fantastic 7-2 victory against the UT Martin squad. This win was part of a three-game series sweep, bringing their impressive overall record to 19-1.
Since kicking off the season on February 14, WKU has successfully swept five series! This remarkable performance has catapulted them into the history books, securing the second-longest winning streak in the program’s history, just behind the 1980 team that racked up an astonishing 19-game streak. But this isn’t just about old records; the Hilltoppers are currently sitting pretty with an unbeatable 18-0 record at home!
This start is being hailed as the best in WKU’s program history, and it equates them with the 2008 Central Florida team for the top record through the first 20 games in Conference USA history. What an accomplishment!
Even with all this success, WKU’s coach, Marc Rardin, is emphasizing the importance of humility. The Hilltoppers know that they must keep their heads down and continue to work hard, regardless of their growing list of achievements. It’s essential to stay grounded, especially when you’re achieving so much!
Adding to the excitement, designated hitter Thomas Marsala has spoken about the rare nature of the winning streak, crediting the pitching staff’s consistent performances. And speaking of pitching, let’s not forget about the standout game from March 16!
In this recent game against UT Martin, WKU got off to a flying start, scoring two early runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Camden Ross and an RBI double from Kyle Hayes. The momentum continued to build as Hayes came through again in the third inning with another RBI double, pushing the score to 3-0.
But the real show-stopper came in the third inning when Marsala blasted a sensational three-run homer, extending the lead to 6-0. This might just be the highlight of the game!
While UT Martin managed to slice through the Hilltoppers’ lead in the sixth inning with their first run, WKU quickly fought back with an RBI double from Ethan Lizama. The team was not about to let up!
On the mound, pitcher Jack Bennett was nothing short of spectacular, delivering four scoreless innings and bumping his season record to 4-0. He has been a powerhouse this season, with no runs allowed over an impressive 22 innings.
Throughout the game, Lizama finished with a stellar performance, securing three hits, while Marsala and Hayes each contributed with two hits. It’s truly a collective effort from the whole team that shows their dedication and teamwork.
As WKU looks to sustain this incredible momentum, they are gearing up to face off against Eastern Kentucky on March 19 at 5 p.m. CDT. Following that, they’ll kick off their conference play against Kennesaw State on March 21, also at 5 p.m. CDT. The excitement in Bowling Green isn’t going anywhere just yet!
This baseball season is turning into one for the record books and has all of Bowling Green cheering on their Hilltoppers. Who knows what other incredible moments are ahead? Stay tuned!
