What an exciting weekend it has been for baseball fans in Bowling Green! The WKU Hilltoppers have shown their strength, sweeping a four-game series against the Central Michigan Chippewas at the famed Nick Denes Field from February 28 to March 2, 2025. This remarkable achievement has propelled the team to a stunning season record of 10-1, marking their best start since the glorious year of 1928. Can you believe that? It’s a time for celebration!
Across the four games, the Hilltoppers displayed their batting prowess, outscoring the Chippewas 29-13. Junior Ryan Wideman stood out with an impressive performance, boasting a batting average of 9 hits in 17 at-bats and adding three RBIs and a home run to his name. It’s safe to say he swung the bat with confidence!
In the first game, WKU secured a solid 9-4 victory. CMU struck first, scoring with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning, but WKU quickly responded. They took the lead in the third inning after walks from Camden Ross and Kyle Hvidsten paved the way for a hit by Joe Siervo that brought in two runs. With a fly out by Wideman later in the game and a bases-clearing double by Carlos Vaquez, the Hilltoppers maintained their lead, sealing the win with a run by Caleb Marmo in the eighth.
The second game was a tighter contest, but WKU emerged victorious 2-0, thanks to a powerful home run by Ethan Lizama in the first inning. Hvidsten further stretched their lead with a triple in the sixth. The highlight, however, was starting pitcher Jack Bennett, who was virtually untouchable—allowing just three hits and striking out seven batters over the course of seven innings. A performance like that really gets the adrenaline pumping!
The third game was a run-fest, ending with a score of 10-5 in favor of WKU. Wideman kicked things off with a home run in the first inning, sending fans into a frenzy. Reid Howard had a breakout moment, hitting his first collegiate home run—a massive three-run bomb in the second inning! Wide-ranging hits, including an RBI triple from Wideman and another home run from Ross, kept the Hilltoppers well ahead, despite a late rally from CMU.
As for the final game? The Hilltoppers capped off this incredible series with an 8-4 win. Thomas Marsala got the ball rolling with an early RBI single, and his performance remained strong throughout the game. Following a solo home run from CMU, WKU mounted responses in the fifth and seventh innings to maintain control. The game culminated with two more runs through a bases-loaded single by Niehaus, ensuring WKU’s sweep was complete!
After this triumphant weekend, Head Coach Marc Rardin expressed pride in the team but also emphasized the need for caution in the early part of the season. Fans can look forward to the next matchup scheduled for March 3 against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. The game is set to start at 4 p.m., so be sure to mark your calendars!
