On a bright and bustling day in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a heartfelt gathering took place that would echo in the hearts of many. The Brent Chumbley Memorial Hilltopper Relays kicked off on March 26, 2025, at the renowned Western Kentucky University (WKU). This event wasn’t just any ordinary track and field meet; it was the very first competition devoted to celebrating the legacy of the late Coach Brent Chumbley, who played a monumental role in shaping WKU’s Track and Field program.
Those who knew Coach Chumbley understood the profound impact he had on his athletes. His passion for the sport and dedication to coaching were evident in every part of his work. Coach Lee Wood, who steered the team’s activities on the day of the meet, highlighted how the athletes felt a deep emotional bond to Coach Chumbley’s legacy. This connection inspired many to achieve their personal bests during the relays.
Among the inspiring stories of the day, Kaison Barton emerged as a standout athlete, making history by setting a new school record in the hammer throw. His remarkable throw of 60.27 meters not only marked a career-best but also placed him second in WKU’s legendary program history. He left behind his beloved wife, Jennifer, and his daughter, Alex, who is currently a determined freshman at WKU. Coach Chumbley, who took charge of WKU’s Cross Country and Track & Field programs beginning in August 2019, had previously enjoyed a successful career at Radford University, coaching numerous NCAA qualifiers and producing All-Americans. His dedication helped shape countless athletes, pushing them to not only excel in sports but also in life.
The spirit of the day was also underlined by the participation of other teams, such as Brescia, Bellarmine, and Belmont. These teams contributed to a spirit of friendly competition wrapped in the warmth of remembrance. Additionally, a special ceremony was planned to retire the jersey of former track and field standout Gayle Harris Watkins on March 28, 2025, further celebrating the rich history of the sport at WKU.
During the meet, senior athletes were honored, reflecting the program’s deep commitment to recognizing its members and their outstanding achievements over the years.
