WKU Alumni Association to host ‘Intergenerational LGBTQIA+ (and Allies) Supper’

Bowling Green, Kentucky – The Western Kentucky University (WKU) Alumni Association is set to host the distinguished ‘Intergenerational LGBTQIA+ (and Allies) Supper’ on April 9. This inclusive event aims to bring together students, faculty, alumni, as well as members of the broader community.

Uniting Generations for a Cause

The occasion is designed to foster connections between generations within the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies, and to create a platform for meaningful conversations over a shared meal. It is an opportunity for students to gain knowledge about resources, support networks, and upcoming LGBTQIA+ programs on campus.

“Students attending the supper can expect a welcoming environment, a free meal, engaging conversations, and a chance to connect with diverse individuals,” said Anthony McAdoo, executive director of the WKU Alumni Association and one of the event’s organizers. The event will also feature structured table rotations and discussion prompts to facilitate interactive conversations.

Origins of the Event

The concept of the event was birthed when Dr. Audra Jennings, head of the history department at WKU, proposed the idea to McAdoo. Inspired by dinners in other communities aimed at combating isolation within the elderly LGBTQIA+ community, they decided to adopt a broader, more inclusive approach.

Since its inception in spring of 2023, the event has drawn considerable support and sponsorship from various organizations – a response that McAdoo, as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community himself, find particularly gratifying. His active participation in ensuring a hospitable ambiance is also noteworthy.

Aiming for a Sense of Belonging

“I hope that those who attend the event feel a sense of belonging and community,” McAdoo said. He also expressed aspiration for attendees to build new friendships, gain insights, access resources, and foster a supportive environment through such intergenerational gatherings.

Those interested in attending can register on the WKU Alumni Association website where both LGBTQIA+ community members and allies are welcome to sign up.
