Mother of Suspect in Winder, Georgia High School Shooting Expresses Deep Regret and Sorrow

Winder, Georgia: Community in Grief Following High School Shooting

It has been just over a week since the heartbreaking shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, which left four people dead, including two students and two teachers. In a recent open letter, Marcee Gray, the mother of the 14-year-old suspect Colt Gray, has expressed her condolences and anger at the tragic event.

Apology and Reflection from the Suspect’s Mother

In her letter, which she shared with the media, Gray addressed the families affected by the shooting, saying, “I want to say that I am so sorry from the bottom of my heart.” She described her son as “not a monster” but rather a quiet, caring, and intelligent young man. “I feel all of your pain and devastation. I grieve and cry with you,” she added.

The victims of this tragic event include two students, Mason and Christian Angulo, both aged 14, and two teachers, 39-year-old Richard Aspinwall and 53-year-old Cristina Irimie. Marcee Gray’s letter conveyed her deep sorrow for their families, stating, “If I could take the place of Mason and Christian, I would without a second thought.”

The Incident’s Background

The shooting took place on [insert date], leading to significant questions about safety measures at the school. Reports indicate that prior to the attack, Marcee Gray had called the school to alert them of an “extreme emergency” concerning her son. She had received a concerning text message from Colt that morning which read, “I’m sorry, mom.” Approximately 30 minutes later, at about 10:20 a.m., the shooting occurred, leaving the community in shock.

During her call to the school, Gray spoke for about 10 minutes with a school counselor who informed her that a teacher had raised concerns about Colt making references to school shootings. “I told them it was an extreme emergency and for them to go immediately and find Colt to check on him,” Marcee Gray stated.

Legal Consequences and Community Reaction

Colt Gray has been charged with four counts of felony murder and is set to be tried as an adult. However, due to his age, he will remain in the custody of Georgia’s juvenile justice system, where he is being kept separate from other young inmates. His father, Colin Gray, has also been charged with several crimes, including involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children, as he reportedly provided Colt with the weapon used in the shooting.

With the community still processing this tragedy, some families of the victims feel that the shooting was preventable. “We believe it was preventable — 100%,” said Lisette Angulo, sister of one of the victims, Christian Angulo. She emphasized that the school had prior knowledge of certain threats but failed to take necessary actions.

The Ongoing Pain

Marcee Gray’s letter serves as a somber reminder of the pain that comes from such senseless violence. She expressed a commitment to seek prayers for Colt as well as for the victims’ families. “We are all in a living nightmare right now,” she wrote, adding that she would never forgive herself for what has happened.

The impact of this event is still unfolding, and the Winder community is left to grapple with the aftermath. Students and families are seeking comfort as they deal with their grief and loss.

This story will continue to develop as more information comes to light regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the legal proceedings involving Colt and Colin Gray.
