In a thrilling showdown on Thursday, January 23, 2025, the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers put on an impressive performance, taking down the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters with a score of 69-61. The game was held at the lively E.A. Diddle Arena, where a spirited crowd of around 4,313 fans, mostly students, came out to support their team.
This victory marks the Lady Toppers’ fourth consecutive win, giving them a solid record of 13-5 overall and 4-2 in Conference USA. Meanwhile, the Louisiana Tech team, though putting up a good fight, fell to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
From the get-go, Western Kentucky asserted their dominance on the court. They charged ahead with a remarkable 14-1 run, quickly amassing a lead that reached 19-5 within just five minutes. Zsofia Telegdy was an early highlight, contributing eight points during this initial scoring run, energizing the crowd.
However, Louisiana Tech wasn’t going down without a fight. With a flourish, they rallied toward the end of the first quarter, executing an 11-2 run to close the gap to 27-24 by the quarter’s end. It was clear that this game was going to be competitive.
In the second quarter, Western Kentucky regained control with a powerful 12-0 run, extending their lead to 39-24. Yet, the Lady Techsters made a comeback as halftime approached, trimming the deficit to 39-32 following an impressive 8-0 run of their own.
As the third quarter unfolded, WKU maintained their grip on the game. The Toppers ended this period on a high note, finishing with a 54-43 lead, thanks to a timely three-pointer from Mackenzie Chatfield that sent the fans into a frenzy.
The final quarter saw Louisiana Tech pushing hard, managing to narrow the gap to just three points at one moment. Despite the mounting pressure, Western Kentucky dug deep and held their ground, keeping the win secure.
Key players for WKU included Destiny Salary, who led the scoring with 17 points, while Alexis Mead also shined with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Zsofia Telegdy and Josie Gilvin contributed 12 points each, with Gilvin also adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists to her stats.
On the other side of the court, Jianna Morris stood out for Louisiana Tech, leading her team with 19 points. Jordan Marshall also had a notable game, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
While the Lady Techsters dominated the boards with a serious 45 rebounds to WKU’s 29 and led with a significant advantage of 22-8 in second-chance points, Western Kentucky’s tight defense proved to be the game-changer. They forced Louisiana Tech into a staggering 21 turnovers, which converted into 23 points for the Lady Toppers. Coach Greg Collins emphasized that though his team faced some challenges, particularly with rebounds and turnovers, their defensive strategy ultimately secured the win.
