Basketball Heartbreak in Huntsville: Western Kentucky Falls to FIU in CUSA Tournament

Huntsville, Alabama – In what turned out to be a nail-biter of a game, Western Kentucky’s men’s basketball team faced a surprising first-round defeat at the Conference USA Men’s Basketball Tournament, losing 64-61 to Florida International University. This unexpected loss marked the end of a season filled with high hopes and aspirations for the Hilltoppers.

Season Summary

Wrapping up the season with a record of 17 wins and 14 losses, the Hilltoppers entered the tournament as the seventh seed. While they were not the favorites to hoist the championship trophy once again, nobody expected such a quick exit against the tenth-seeded FIU. It was indeed a tough day at the VBC Propst Arena, a game both teams fought hard in but could only be one victor.

Game Highlights

The game started off strong for Western Kentucky. They quickly built a commanding lead, going up as much as 13 points in the first half, reaching a score of 25-12 after a timely tip-in from Khristian Lander. But as the first half wore on, Florida International, initially struggling with their shooting, began to find their rhythm. They missed an astonishing 20 consecutive three-point attempts before Asim Jones finally found the mark with just over a minute left in the half. The first half ended with a twist as FIU went on an 8-0 run, capped off by a buzzer-beater from Jayden Brewer, leaving them only trailing by 5 points at halftime with a score of 27-22.

Second Half Turnaround

Coming out of the locker room, WKU looked to reclaim control of the game and initially extended their lead back to double digits at 34-24, thanks to a 7-2 run. However, the pendulum swung back in favor of FIU as they fought their way back into contention. By the 8:59 mark in the game, they took their first lead at 43-42. It was anyone’s game at that point.

As the clock wound down, Western Kentucky’s last substantial lead came from a layup by Blaise Keita at 52-50. But then the late-game drama unfolded. FIU’s Asim Jones became a free-throw machine, netting six straight from the charity stripe to push his team’s lead to 61-55. But hold on! WKU’s Don McHenry wasn’t done yet. He hit a huge three-pointer and was fouled, completing a four-point play that narrowed the score down to 61-59 with just nine seconds left.

Final Moments & Stats

As the final seconds ticked away, the pressure piled on, and FIU was able to secure their victory with a series of foul shots, leaving Western Kentucky looking on in disappointment.

Shooting was a tough affair for WKU, who managed to make only 1 out of 18 three-point attempts. With an overall shooting percentage of 35.9% and a free throw success rate of 70%, it was clear that offensive struggles were a key factor in their defeat. Leading the scoring for WKU was Braxton Bayless, who notched up 12 points. Enoch Kalambay contributed with 11 points, while Tyrone Marshall Jr. added eight points and eight rebounds, a commendable effort under the circumstances.

The Road Ahead

As the dust settles and the dust bunnies begin to collect in the corners of the arena, Coach Hank Plona reflected on a season that certainly didn’t go as smoothly as they’d hoped. The pressure to return to the NCAA Tournament weighed heavily on the squad throughout the season, leaving fans and players alike eager for what’s next. While this game might sting, basketball is always a new season away, and the Hilltoppers will surely be looking to bounce back with renewed energy and determination.
