Board Concerns over Educational Funding

In addition to the exciting updates regarding closures and academic calendars, the WCPS board and the Bowling Green Independent School Board recently discussed an important issue affecting education funding. They expressed concerns over Kentucky Constitutional Amendment 2, which could allow public funds to be used for education outside of public schools. Board member Cierra Waller raised valid points about how this could hurt low-income families, particularly in terms of transportation options.

Another board member, Garry Chaffin, advocated for increased funding and resources to support public education, emphasizing the need for better support rather than changes proposed by the amendment.

Safety Precautions at Oakland Elementary

On a more immediate note, an incident occurred at Oakland Elementary on Thursday afternoon when several students and staff were evacuated due to a reported medical issue. The evacuation was precautionary, triggered by exhaust from an HVAC unit. Though people reported feeling unwell, a swift response from first responders ensured everyone’s safety.

The students and staff were temporarily relocated to the nearby Oakland Baptist Church while emergency teams evaluated the situation. Medical personnel from Med Center EMS, along with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and Smiths Grove Police Department, were on site to assist. Fortunately, the investigation revealed no gas leak; the HVAC unit’s safety system was merely tripped by exhaust fumes. The building was cleared as safe for use by local fire department crews and Atmos Energy, allowing school to resume the next day.

In total, approximately 98 individuals experienced mild symptoms, all of whom were evaluated on-site by medical staff. It’s reassuring to know that WCPS prioritizes the health and safety of its students and staff.
