Sponsor Our ArticlesDue to severe winter weather, Warren County Public Schools will shift to a Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) day on Friday, February 21, 2025. Temperatures have dropped significantly, leading to school closures and multiple districts opting for NTI days. Local utilities offer tips for maintaining safety and warmth during the cold snap. Health officials also warn about rising illness rates in the area, encouraging vaccinations and hygiene practices to keep families safe. This proactive approach aims to continue education despite challenging weather conditions.
Folks in Warren County, get ready for a little twist in the school routine! Due to the chilly weather making quite the impact, schools will be implementing a Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) day this coming Friday, February 21, 2025. It seems that Mother Nature has decided to throw a bit of a tantrum, resulting in multiple school closures on Thursday.
The recent winter spell has seen temperatures dipping dangerously low, with some areas hitting the single digits. Can you believe it? That’s colder than a penguin’s picnic! Last weekend, residents experienced heavy rains, but that was just the warm-up. Things really got icy on Tuesday night when a significant amount of snow decided to join the party. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, another round of snow fell on Wednesday night, making everything even more treacherous out there.
It’s not just Warren County feeling the wintry woes. Nearby districts like Bowling Green Independent, Western Kentucky University, and schools in Simpson, Logan, Allen, Glasgow, Barren, Butler, and Russellville have also opted for an NTI day. If it’s snowing or icy outside, chances are kids are cozy at home getting their schoolwork done in slippers instead of shoveling snow!
Bowling Green Public Works are working diligently to clear the roads, but with the National Weather Service predicting temperatures to remain below freezing until the weekend, it sounds like drivers should take caution.
To keep the lights on (and the homes warm), Bowling Green Municipal Utilities (BGMU) has some helpful tips for residents. They recommend turning down those thermostats, using fans to make sure the heat is circulating well, and even doing laundry with cold water to save energy. Want to hug those heating bills? Lower your water heater temperatures to 120 degrees and embrace the sunshine by closing curtains to let in the warmth!
Atmos Energy has also chimed in, advising everyone to clear the snow off their gas meters. Make sure your thermostat is set to a cozy 68 degrees when you’re home, and consider lowering it to 58 degrees while out running errands.
But it’s not just the weather we need to keep an eye on. A wave of illness is currently sweeping through Southcentral Kentucky, with various ailments like Influenza A, Norovirus, Coronavirus, and RSV hitting schools hard. You might have noticed that Edmonson County’s attendance has already dropped to 84%, prompting them to close school doors for a while.
Health experts are urging everyone to take precautionary steps like getting flu shots and using personal protective equipment. If Norovirus knocks on your door, remember: it’s sneaky and can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours. So, keep those hands clean and surfaces sanitized!
As we brace ourselves against the elements, Warren County is adapting with creativity and caution. NTI days allow students to continue learning safely, no matter what the weather throws our way. Let’s band together, stay warm, and stay safe. Here’s hoping for warmer temperatures soon and a swift return to “normal” school days!
