Warren County Jail Launches New Addiction Recovery Program for Inmates

Warren County, KY—In a significant step towards helping those battling addiction, the Warren County Regional Jail is kicking off a new program aimed at supporting incarcerated individuals recovering from addiction. The jail is making waves as it becomes the first correctional facility in Kentucky to introduce a full-time peer support specialist.

The announcement, made by Jailer Stephen Harmon, revealed that the role will be filled by Amanda Dettman, who hails from the Louisa-based treatment provider Addiction Recovery Care. Dettman will be responsible for leading small group sessions focusing on addiction and recovery, which is expected to be a game-changer for inmates seeking a fresh start.

Details of the Program

Jailer Harmon emphasized that this position is not static but rather one that will evolve. “This is very much going to be a position that grows as we go,” he stated. The program will allow inmates who want to participate to engage in beneficial group activities. Dettman will also assist in navigating treatment options available after their release, connecting them with resources from Addiction Recovery Care and other facilities.

The primary goal of this initiative is to prepare inmates for a successful re-entry into society. There are additional objectives, including reducing recidivism rates and enhancing overall public safety. Harmon pointed out that having someone devoted to this cause inside the jail can make a significant impact.

About Addiction Recovery Care

Addiction Recovery Care, founded by a former prosecutor who is a recovering alcoholic, has established itself as a relevant player in the field. The organization runs over 30 treatment centers both residential and outpatient, and they served more than 8,000 clients in the last year alone. While most of their facilities are located in eastern Kentucky, they are also looking to establish a presence in Bowling Green.

“We’re excited to have someone working with small groups of our residents dealing with various stages of addiction and recovery,” Harmon stated. This collaboration has been in discussions for several months between the jail and Addiction Recovery Care, making this an anticipatory moment for both parties.

Looking Towards the Future

As the program gets underway, Harmon expressed his eagerness to see how Dettman’s role develops. He stated, “Hopefully a month or two down the road, we’ll look back and say we thought this position would accomplish these goals, and by the first of the year we’ll say this person will do more than we previously planned.” This outlook reflects a commitment to adapting and growing the program based on its success and the needs of the inmates.

The addition of a peer support specialist is a promising move aimed at addressing the underlying issues that contribute to cycles of addiction within the incarceration system. Harmon believes that with proper support, many of these incarcerated individuals can turn their lives around and contribute positively to society upon their release.

A Community Effort

The whole community will benefit from this initiative. By focusing on rehabilitation rather than solely punishment, the jail aims to pave a smoother path for those re-entering society. The stakeholders involved are enthusiastic about what lies ahead, and as the program unfolds, it is hoped that it will set a precedent for other facilities across the state.

As the weather stays warm with highs reaching 84°F today and a low of 63°F tonight, it seems fitting that the Warren County Regional Jail is making strides towards a brighter future for its residents. With summer-like conditions matching its optimistic outlook, the start of the peer support program could herald a new dawn for many struggling with addiction.
