At Smiths Grove, a vehicle caught fire while at the gas pumps of the popular chain Buc-ee’s. The local authorities were quick to respond. Smiths Grove’s Chief of Police, Jason Franks, reported that the fire was limited to the interior of the car. Notifying the intensity of the unfortunate incident, he added, “It was a single-vehicle fire.”
The car belonged to a local couple who were out with their beloved dog, fondly known as Itchy. The innocent canine hero couldn’t escape the incident and suffered severe injuries. Despite the quick reaction and heroic attempts of the first responders to treat Itchy at the scene, his life couldn’t be saved. Franks expressed his deep remorse, “Itchy was immediately taken to a local vet clinic, but despite the prompt medical attention, the little friend didn’t survive.”
While the incident unfolded into tragedy, some exceptional acts of bravery and kindness emerged as a beacon of hope for the affected family. Two members of the local volunteer fire department went above and beyond in their efforts to rescue Itchy. They stood by the family in their time of distress, spent time comforting them, and even paid from their pockets for the dog’s treatment. For their selfless gestures, Franks commended the duo, adding, “Our community is filled with great people with big hearts.”
The fire was skillfully contained, and measures were promptly taken to shut off the gas pumps to prevent further escalation. The Smiths Grove Police Department took swift action in containing the situation with the help of the local Fire Department and support from WCSO. The gas pumps are now back in normal operation. The cause of the fire remains unknown and under investigation.
