Bowling Green, KY – A trial date has been marked for January 15, 2025, for the two men implicated in the fatal shooting of a Western Kentucky University (WKU) student last year. Malik Jones and Kobee Lancaster, the accused, appeared for initial pretrial meetings on Monday.
Ayanna Morgan, a 21-year-old student at WKU, was the unfortunate victim of a shooting incident that took place on July 23, 2023, at the Muse apartment complex. After being shot, Morgan was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to a trauma center in Nashville, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Jones and Lancaster were apprehended and charged in July of 2023 for their alleged role in Morgan’s murder. Their trial date has now been set, creating some anticipation amongst the campus community and the local population, who have been closely following developments in the case.
As reported, Malik Jones and Kobee Lancaster had their initial pretrial conferences earlier this week. They are scheduled for one final pretrial conference on September 16, during which additional evidence will be analyzed. The pieces of evidence include body camera footage from an interview conducted at the hospital where Morgan died.
The legal representatives for both parties confirmed that there are still significant evidence pieces to consider. Thus, the upcoming pretrial meeting is deemed crucial in shaping the trajectory of the trial.
Meanwhile, the Bowling Green Police Department is still searching for a third individual – Malcolm Jones, the identical twin brother of Malik Jones. The police have asked anyone with information about Malcolm’s whereabouts to contact BGPD at (270) 393-4000.
