Bowling Green, Ky. – Emergency responders have temporarily suspended their search efforts this evening for a 17-year-old boy who went missing while swimming in the Barren River. The incident unfolded on River Street, where a distress call was made around 3 p.m. on Saturday.
According to information from BGFD Public Information Officer Katie McKee, the teenager was reportedly struggling to stay afloat in the river. Two other individuals were with him at the time and attempted to assist but were unable to successfully pull him from the water.
The quick response from local authorities led to the immediate deployment of search and rescue teams. Various emergency services, including the Barren County Rescue, Richardsville Fire Department, Warren County Emergency Management, and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, were present at the scene. Together, they formed a coordinated effort to locate the missing boy.
Rescue operations commenced promptly after the call came in. However, as evening approached, officials made the tough decision to suspend the search for the night. McKee reassured that efforts would resume on Saturday morning, stating, “We will continue searching until the teen is found or until conditions become unsafe for our rescue teams.”
During the peak of the rescue operations, River Street was temporarily closed to ensure the safety of both the responders and the local community. The street has since been reopened to the public as the emergency crews continue to focus on the search.
The mix of warm weather and afternoon sun has drawn many people to local waterways, a reminder of the importance of swimming safely and being aware of one’s surroundings. This incident amplifies the risks associated with swimming in natural bodies of water.
The unfolding situation has evoked a strong sense of concern within the local community. Family, friends, and nearby residents are anxiously awaiting news of the boy’s safety. Community members have begun to gather near the area to offer their support as rescue teams work diligently.
As the search continues, it serves as a poignant reminder of the need for caution while engaging in water activities, especially in unfamiliar environments.
This story is still developing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available. As officials prepare to resume their search efforts on Saturday, the hope remains that they will locate the missing teenager safely and swiftly.
