BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Vital Step Toward Career Readiness

High school seniors at South Warren High School took a significant step forward in their career readiness journey by participating in a soft skill workshop. The workshop, conducted by renowned leadership expert Greg Coker, provided students profound insights into soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, customer service, teamwork, and conflict resolution.

Understanding Soft Skills

Soft skills contribute tremendously to a professional’s success by going beyond the hard technical skills and IQ. “Research suggests that EQ emotional intelligence coupled with IQ equals success,” asserted Coker during the workshop. He underlined that people are often judged on their likability, trustworthiness, and approachability.

The Importance of a Positive Attitude

Coker strongly emphasized the role of a positive attitude in the workplace. “If I’m working at an organization, I want to make sure that people who greet my employers, and greet my employees and greets my customers are those that are projecting that yes, attitude. I call it the psychology of the greeting,” he stated. The interaction with customers and team members often sets the tone for future interactions, making a positive attitude essential.

The Difference Between EQ and IQ

Coker further elaborated on the difference between emotional intelligence (EQ) and intellectual intelligence (IQ). He pointed out that while performance contributes 10% to career trajectory, image presentation accounts for 30%, and exposure makes up the remaining 60%. He emphasized the critical role of exposure in demonstrating EQ and IQ effectively.

Valuable Takeaways from the Workshop

Many attendees found the workshop immensely valuable. South Warren High School senior, Daymon Williams, shared his experience, admitting, “This morning, he was giving us handshakes and normally, I am not that good in the mornings.” He added that the session prompted him to make a better introduction and improved first impression.

Jason Miller, another senior, underlined that soft skills could make a significant difference during job interviews.“You can walk in somewhere, and not know a lick of anything about what you’re doing. But if you have confidence and you’re able to learn, then you’re probably going to get the job,” Miller noted.

A Lifelong Commitment to Soft Skills

Coker has a background in communication psychology and has devoted his life to imparting vital soft skills. He has a unique approach to teaching these skills, based on his 25 years in corporate America. Coker also runs similar programs in prison systems, reflecting his commitment to widely disseminating this valuable knowledge.
