In an arena where competition and camaraderie meet, Bowling Green, Kentucky, sets the stage for the Formula Sun Grand Prix, a highly anticipated international collegiate solar car race. The event is slated from July 16-18 on the renowned National Corvette Museum Track.
The Formula Sun Grand Prix serves as the qualifier for the prestigious American Solar Challenge, a cross-country series involving vibrant street races for solar-powered cars. To be eligible for the upcoming Grand Prix, each vehicle has to pass numerous inspections ensuring their operation and compliance with essential safety and design regulations.
Teams of undergraduate students representing universities worldwide form the backbone of this competition. Participants travel from varying locales, some from across the United States, while others hail from countries like Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands. Each team is a diverse mix of roles, including solar and battery specialists, media crew, and even finance experts tasked with budget management.
Like Western Michigan University, some teams are competing in their first American Solar Challenge since 2018, bringing a fresh air of excitement and anticipation. Maddy Reidy, a Western Michigan team member, captures the essence of their dynamics, stating, “We operate just like a family… we bicker and argue, but at the end of the day, we all understand we have a common goal of making this the best car we’ve ever had.”
Despite the intense competition, there exists a shared community spirit that is noteworthy. Reidy shares, “Everybody here just wants to help each other… we don’t want to see anybody break down on the side of the road because we all understand how long it’s taken.”
The process of developing a functioning solar car takes years of meticulous planning, design, and manufacture, involving significant time, energy, and love. This shared experience fosters a profound sense of understanding and camaraderie among students from diverse backgrounds and geographical locations.
The Formula Sun Grand Prix competition creates an environment where everyone strives for success but also hopes for their counterparts to compete effectively. The overall environment is incredibly supportive with teams readily sharing tools, information, and assistance to ensure everyone stays on track, according to Aaron Green, a member from the Appalachian State University team.
The Grand Prix is open to the public and set to kick off on July 16, with races commencing at 10 am. In an age where green energy and sustainable solutions define our future, events like the Formula Sun Grand Prix serve as a celebration of innovative spirit and collaborative teamwork, igniting dreams and fueling ambitions.
