To be eligible for the upcoming Grand Prix, each vehicle has to pass numerous inspections ensuring their operation and compliance with essential safety and design regulations.

Teams of undergraduate students representing universities worldwide form the backbone of this competition. Participants travel from varying locales, some from across the United States, while others hail from countries like Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands. Each team is a diverse mix of roles, including solar and battery specialists, media crew, and even finance experts tasked with budget management.

Like Western Michigan University, some teams are competing in their first American Solar Challenge since 2018, bringing a fresh air of excitement and anticipation. Maddy Reidy, a Western Michigan team member, captures the essence of their dynamics, stating, “We operate just like a family… we bicker and argue, but at the end of the day, we all understand we have a common goal of making this the best car we’ve ever had.”

Despite the intense competition, there exists a shared community spirit that is noteworthy. Reidy shares, “Everybody here just wants to help each other… we don’t want to see anybody break down on the side of the road because we all understand how long it’s taken.”
