SGA Passes Legislation, Introduces New Scholarship
In a recent turn of events, the Student Government Association (SGA) passed two new pieces of legislation and announced the introduction of a new scholarship. The crucial decisions were made during the SGA’s routine senate meeting held on Tuesday night. The association also unveiled plans for an upcoming trip to Frankfort for the Rally for Higher Education.
New Scholarship and SGA’s Trip to Frankfort
Sam Kurtz, the Student Body President, initiated a report briefing the senate’s upcoming trip to Frankfort, Kentucky. The rally, scheduled for later this week, will see interaction between the SGA representatives and several SGA organizations from other institutions of higher education within Kentucky. The participants will also meet with their House of Representatives representative who hails from Bowling Green and represents Western Kentucky.
Alongside, Donte Reed, the Chief of Staff, unveiled a new scholarship that has been added to the SGA’s website. The scholarship, which is based on need, seeks to provide students in need of Uber vouchers with an opportunity to secure four Uber vouchers. The scholarship forms are due by March 29, no later than 5 p.m.
Moving Forward: Calls for Reelection and Other Announcements
Moreover, the student body president encouraged current senators to consider running for re-election in the upcoming semester, emphasizing their pivotal role in fostering the growth of the organization. The new SGA Community Builder Excellence Scholarship for incoming freshmen in the Bowling Green area was also discussed, with applications already available on the SGA website.
Further developments included the announcement of Bowling Green’s Earth Day celebrations now moved from April 22 to April 19, as well as the tentative scheduling of a Bowling Green Cleanup for March 28.
Student Mental Health Initiatives and Passed Legislation
The meeting also witnessed Sophia Bryant, Head of the Student Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee, announcing the WKU Counseling Center’s plans to host a “What Were You Wearing?” exhibit, marking Sexual Assault Prevention Month. This exhibit will maintain complete anonymity, with clothing for the exhibit provided by the Counseling Center.
Bryant proposed legislation to sponsor t-shirts from the WKU Counseling Center for sexual assault awareness, requesting to include the SGA logo on the back of the t-shirts. The bill successfully passed.
Additional Dental Vouchers and Final Remarks
Ann-Marie Wright, Junior Senator and Head of the Student Experience and Enrollment Committee, along with Reed, introduced additional legislation. This called for offering more dental vouchers in the SGA office, following the earlier legislation’s overwhelming success which saw 30 dental vouchers being exhausted within a week. This new legislation paved the way for an additional 30 dental vouchers, soon to be available for students.
