In a remarkable move aimed at honoring and perpetuating the legacy of a brilliant student, the Student Government Association (SGA) has launched the Abby Nash Creativity Scholarship. This news coming into the limelight has stirred a wave of appreciation towards the SGA throughout the community.
Abby Nash, a senior graphic design and marketing major, left an indelible impact on the institution with her passion and creativity before her untimely demise on December 13, 2023. The scholarship aims to keep her spirit alive and inspire other students to follow their creative pursuits with the same fervor and dedication Abby embodied.
Although the scholarship is open to any student, the application process particularly encourages students from “creative” departments, including art and design, marketing, English, media and communication, music, theater, and dance. The scholarship will grant two successful applicants $500 each, culminating in a total of $1000 in awards.
As of now, the scholarship remains non-renewable. However, future SGA senates could revise the terms to make the scholarship renewable. The co-authors of the scholarship, CEBS Senator Kayla Distler, along with Jack McCoun and McKenna Fleshman, believe the scholarship aligns well with the SGA mandate since it centers on students and their betterment.
Abby Nash was renowned for using her art to express her passions. In the words of her peers, “Abby was one of the most intensely creative people I’ve ever met. She believed in doing what you love, cared deeply about the world, and made the most of every experience.” Therefore, the Abby Nash Creativity Scholarship aims to facilitate applicants to emulate Abby’s zeal for the arts.
The scholarship was sponsored by the Mental Health & Wellbeing and the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion SGA committees. Funding for this scholarship is being pulled from the SGA’s legislative discretionary budget, a pool of funds accessible to senators upon the passing of a written bill.
Applications for the Abby Nash Creativity Scholarship have already commenced and will continue until March 29, 2024, 5:00 pm CST. Students wishing to apply can visit the official website to procure the application form and begin their journey to fostering their creative pursuits via this scholarship.
