‘It’s ten years, but it feels like yesterday’: Photojournalism Alumni Return for ‘Roommates: From Western to the White House’ Event
A Trip Down Memory Lane
Jabin Botsford and Demetrius Freeman, former photojournalism students, alumni, roommates, and current White House photojournalists, returned to their alma mater for the “Roommates: From Western to the White House” event earlier this week. This event was a part of a prestigious lecture series and showcased a gallery reception of striking photos captured by them during their prolific careers, including some iconic shots from the presidencies of former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. Both alumni commented, “It’s ten years, but it feels like yesterday.” They presented their work in a hall laden with their early memories, showing how their photos evolved from high school, through college, to their subsequent careers.
Jabin Botsford’s Journey
Jabin Botsford began his tryst with photography in high school, where his passion for capturing moments came to life in the school darkroom. During his time at university, he worked as a staff photographer for a popular college periodical and later interned with a reputed national daily. Botsford’s advice to emerging photographers was clear and simple, “You’ve got to want it more than anything… stand where no one else is standing.” He insisted that sometimes, sweeping photography awards can be a matter of positioning, suggesting that “The difference in a Pulitzer [and not] can sometimes be an inch to the left or the right.”
Demetrius Freeman’s Adventure
Demetrius Freeman discovered his love for photojournalism in 2007 when he shot his first portrait photo. A year later, he had the opportunity to photograph former President Barack Obama during a campaign speech in Georgia. His journey took him through the nooks and crannies of society, covering protests, political campaigns, and eventually leading him to the world of freelance photography. He emphasized that embracing every opportunity is key to a successful career in photojournalism, and taking risks is part of the job when covering the White House.
The Takeaway
Aspiring photographers in the audience found the advice given by these accomplished photojournalists invaluable. One student shared, “As soon as they announced that Jabin and Demetrius were going to do the show, I knew I had to go, see this.” The event reiterated the importance of never leaving home without a camera and always seeking new perspectives.
The photographs captured by Freeman and Botsford will be displayed in the Jody Richards Hall photo gallery until April 19, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire. By sharing their experiences and insights, these renowned alumni are not only reflecting on their journey but also illuminating the path for future photojournalists.
