Throwback Thursday: Bringing Rodgers and Hammerstein to Bowling Green

Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Pioneers of Musical Theater

Often referred to as the most celebrated Broadway production duo, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II crafted an unforgettable legacy in the performing arts scene throughout the 1940s and 1950s. With their impeccably-produced musicals, they helped to usher in the Golden Age of musical theater, casting legends from the Golden Era of Hollywood.

Their initial association began at Columbia University in the 1920s where they collaborated on variety shows. However, it wasn’t until 1943 that they achieved their biggest hit with Oklahoma!. After a few minor adjustments, including a title change, it became the best hit that propelled their producing careers.

They went on to create timeless classics such as Carousel, State Fair, South Pacific, The King and I, and the popular television musical rendition of Cinderella. The Sound of Music also featured on their illustrious roster a few years later.

Bringing Cinderella to Life in Bowling Green

The Ramsey Theatre Company, a hometown theater production company in Bowling Green, is bringing the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s version of Cinderella to the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center this weekend.

The classic Cinderella tale, which was first published by the Grimm brothers in 1812 and then animated by Walt Disney in 1950, is vibrantly recreated by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the stage in this rendition.

About Ramsey Theatre Company

The Ramsey Theatre Company came into existence two years ago, following a generous donation from Robert P. Ramsey, a passionate supporter of the arts. Thanks to his benevolence, Bowling Green now has opportunities to experience Broadway theater and the arts have become more accessible to the community. This is achieved through various activities integrated with live performances, courtesy of the Arts of Southern Kentucky.

You can acquire tickets for this weekend’s performances via the SKyPAC website.
