Bowling Green, Kentucky – National Public Works Week, a time dedicated to commemorating the men and women responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of city services, is being celebrated with great pomp in the city of Bowling Green. The city’s Public Works Department, with its five specialized divisions, is at the heart of these celebrations, underlining the significant role these unsung heroes play in the community’s overall functioning.
The Facilities Division, Operations Division, Fleet Division, Environmental Compliance Division, and the Planning and Design Divisions make up the Bowling Green Public Works Department. They are responsible for various services ranging from maintaining city buildings to managing stormwater, thus proving instrumental in ensuring the city’s smooth running.
One of Bowling Green’s notable achievements is its recognition as the only city within Kentucky to be accredited by the American Public Works Association (APWA). This accreditation confirms their adherence to the highest standards set forth by the Association, emphasizing a commitment to sustainable practices and efficient allocation of resources.
“We have professionals that come in and they review all of our policies, our standards, our practices and every four years we come out at the top,” Lizette Garcia, administrative assistant at Bowling Green Public Works, proudly stated. “It just goes to show that we are spending citizen tax dollars in the best possible way.”
Adding to the spirit of the event, the Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation on Wednesday recognizing and celebrating Public Works Week in Bowling Green. This declaration aligns with the National Public Works Week, further enhancing the significance of the work rendered by these departments at a local level.
The celebration of Public Works Week is not just about recognizing the organizations, but more importantly, it is about the individuals – the men and women who, away from the limelight, ensure that the city’s operations remain uninterrupted.
From maintaining city infrastructure to handling environmental concerns, from designing plans for city improvement to ensuring compliance with environmental laws, the work that public workers do is integral and far-reaching.
National Public Works Week is, therefore, a well-deserved salute to these everyday heroes: the dedicated professionals who keep our cities running, our buildings maintained, and our future secure and sustainable.
As we go about our regular routines, we rarely think about what goes into keeping our cities functional and safe. This week, Bowling Green gives us a moment to pause and tip our hats to the silent heroes in city utilities, operations, and maintenance – the Public Works Department.
