Bowling Green is facing a bit of a bumpy ride lately, with the recent heavy snow and rain leading to a surge in potholes throughout the area. These pesky little craters are more than just an inconvenience; they pose a risk to road safety and can destabilize the very foundation of our roads. But fear not, the Bowling Green Public Works team is on the case!
On Tuesday afternoon, February 25, 2025, operations maintenance technician Kris Keenan was hard at work on Hickory Street, filling in a pothole using the Aquaphalt cold patch repair method. This approach allows the crew to make temporary fixes even during the chilly winter months – a crucial step as the city continues to combat the aftermath of volatile weather conditions. Kris wasn’t alone in this endeavor; he had fellow technicians Charles Gray and Doug Hootes assisting in giving our roads some much-needed TLC.
So, why the sudden surge in potholes? It’s simple. The recent rainfall and snow have led to water infiltration, which, when it freezes, expands and creates those dreaded holes. With the additional impact from traffic and snow plows, it’s no wonder our roads are looking a little worse for wear.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3, which covers many counties including Allen, Warren, and others, is bracing for a long repair season. District spokesperson Wes Watt has noted that it could take several weeks to even months to address the extensive pothole situation caused by the unpredictable weather.
Typically, the pothole-patching season runs from late February through March, just as winter starts to transition into spring. Bowling Green Public Works keeps a budget of $2 million every year, specifically allocated for road maintenance. This funding is split evenly between a liquid fuel tax and the General Fund, each contributing $1 million.
To prioritize repairs, the city conducts an annual lane assessment, working alongside an engineering firm to score roads. A score of below 70 indicates repairs are needed, with public reports and assessments guiding their repair efforts. Residents are encouraged to be proactive by reporting potholes via email or phone, and the city promises to respond within 24 hours.
One exciting initiative is led by Scotty’s Contracting + Stone, allowing residents from Brownsville, Cave City, Horse Cave, Oakland, and Park City to vote on the potholes they see as the most problematic in their areas. It’s a wonderful way to get the community involved in road maintenance!
While repairs are underway, the city will work hard to keep the public informed about any upcoming lane closures. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and slow down when navigating areas with standing water, which can cause further damage to road integrity.
Bowling Green Public Works plans to continue their repair efforts until asphalt plants are accessible this summer. Reflecting on their work from last year, the department managed to fill 108 potholes, which underscores the challenge they face with limited manpower. In some cases, they may resort to using gravel filler for larger potholes until proper asphalt can be applied.
For instance, after a report of a large pothole on Smallhouse Road, crews quickly responded and made a temporary cold patch repair, with plans to reassess the situation as soon as possible.
