Bowling Green Resident Faces Multiple Charges Following Police Chase

In the sleepy town of Bowling Green, Kentucky, the quiet of an early Thursday morning was disrupted when a man led local police on a chase, following suspicions of attempted burglary and vehicle tampering at 1201 Morgantown Road.

Officers were dispatched around 2:18 a.m. following reports of two individuals behaving suspiciously in the area. One of the suspects was seen moving around on a bicycle. As the officers arrived, the suspect on the bike reportedly increased his speed and hopped over a nearby barbed wire fence.

The police officer pursued on foot, shouting at the suspect to halt, but it fell on deaf ears as the suspect continued to flee. The chase led across Veterans Memorial Lane and over a wooden fence.

According to the officers on the scene, they found the suspect lying down in a field close to the 1400 block of Veterans Memorial Lane, seemingly attempting to rise. The suspect, later identified as a 34-year-old local named Zebulon Baucum, was warned to stay down as the officer approached.

Despite the officer’s efforts, including unsuccessful taser deployment, Mr. Baucum tried to resist. The situation escalated when more officers arrived, and Mr. Baucum continued to struggle against arrest. An injury was reported during the chase when an officer hurt his shoulder.

Once secured, Mr. Baucum was evaluated by EMS on the scene before he made another attempt to escape. Finally, he was handcuffed and transported to the Warren County Detention Center.

Mr. Baucum now faces charges including second-degree fleeing or evading police, second-degree escape, resisting arrest, and public intoxication. It is important to note that the public intoxication charge was for a controlled substance, not alcohol.

Safety Concerns in the Town

This incident comes amidst reports of multiple vehicle break-ins on Industrial Drive. These ongoing challenges in the town have led local law enforcement departments to intensify their patrol efforts, with a focus on enhancing the safety and security of their citizens.

Local residents are encouraged to be vigilant, take necessary precautions, and report any suspicious activities immediately to the police. This includes securing their homes, vehicles, and other properties correctly.

Continuing Investigation

While the pursuit of Mr. Baucum may have ended, the investigation is still ongoing. One crucial piece of the puzzle is the second suspect who, at this time, remains unidentified. It’s not clear if this individual was also involved in the attempted burglary, but the authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

This recent development is a stern reminder that crime has no fixed hours, and that every citizen has a crucial role to play in maintaining law and order in their community.
