New Wine Shop Brings a Fresh Experience to Downtown Bowling Green

A unique flavor experience has arrived in Downtown Bowling Green with the opening of the Staircase Wine Shop. Nestled in the historic 1837 Quigley-Younglove Building, the shop offers an extensive array of wines and spirits from around the globe. The prime location next to Meltdown Ice Cream on State Street has attracted curious wine enthusiasts since its opening. Staircase Wine Shop promises an enticing and fresh experience for its customers.

Offering a Vast World of Wine

Owner Bill Kehrwald, a homebrew enthusiast who has graduated from WKU, is excited to welcome new and returning customers to his establishment. With a passion for the art of tasting notes and bouquet, Kehrwald wants to introduce his customers to an immersive experience of wine discovery. “The number one thing is to let people explore wine and the world of wine in a supportive, nurturing space,” Kehrwald emphasized. The goal is to listen to the customers’ preferences and guide them to discover new wines they might enjoy.

Fostering a Community of Wine Lovers

“It isn’t about me telling people what tastes good,” said Kehrwald, “It’s me trying to listen and help them discover what they like. Whether it’s for tonight’s meal, or if it’s like, ‘I want to learn more about what this is.’ ” Kehrwald, propelled by his college homebrewing endeavor and backed by food industry experience, aspires to create a community-like atmosphere in his store, akin to the one he and his wife Melinda Grimsley enjoyed during their visits to various wine shops.

A Long-Awaited Dream

The opening of the Staircase Wine Shop is the culmination of a long-held dream of Kehrwald and Grimsley. After years of discussing the idea of opening a wine bar, the duo finally landed on launching a retail wine shop. After several fortunate networking opportunities, they succeeded in establishing their business in the heart of Bowling Green city. “It felt like everything kind of came to get snapped into place,” Grimsley said.

Promoting Local Positive Growth

Both Kehrwald and Grimsley are eager to contribute positively to Bowling Green’s growth. Their vision aligns with the aspirations of many other local business owners who want to augment the city’s downtown scene. With the aim of being different and unique, they hope their wine shop will appeal to both locals and tourists, promoting community spirit and the charm of Bowling Green.

Staircase Wine Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. With a warm welcome to all, especially students of legal drinking age who are willing to try something new, the Staircase Wine Shop is ready to guide anyone willing to embark on a new wine journey.

The promising future looks bright for Bowling Green with the opening of such ventures that encourage culture, exploration, and community building. As Kehrwald concluded, “Keep the local ownership; keep people doing weird, unique things,” a true testament to the enduring spirit of Kentucky’s vibrant towns and cities.
