Sponsor Our ArticlesBowling Green’s Metals Innovation Initiative (MI2) sees new leadership with the appointment of Mike Buckentin as CEO. Buckentin aims to enhance innovation in Kentucky’s metals sector, focusing on workforce, energy, and raw material challenges. With recent industry growth and promising partnerships on the horizon, MI2 is positioned for exciting advancements in the coming years.
In a significant move for the metals industry, Mike Buckentin has been appointed as the new CEO of the Metals Innovation Initiative (MI2). With a wealth of experience under his belt, Buckentin steps into this role fresh off his retirement as the CEO of Logan Aluminum, where he made a notable impact over his seven-year tenure.
MI2, which kicked off in 2022, has its sights set on positioning Kentucky as a prime location for innovations in the metals sector. Headquartered at the Innovation Campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, MI2 has been busy on the growth front. Initially comprised of just eight member companies, the organization has expanded to over 20, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon. Buckentin has been involved with MI2 since its inception, serving on its board of directors, and now he aims to enhance the initiative’s mission even further.
What’s particularly impressive is the recognition MI2 has garnered. The group recently snagged a U.S. Department of Energy innovation prize, which speaks volumes about its energy and talent initiatives. This recognition sets a promising tone for Buckentin’s leadership as he aims to harness relationships built during his time at Logan Aluminum to fuel MI2’s mission.
One of Buckentin’s primary goals as the new CEO is to address key issues facing Kentucky’s metals industry, namely workforce, energy, and raw material concerns. He plans to actively collaborate with the Kentucky General Assembly to tackle these challenges head-on. Given that the metals industry in Kentucky has grown by an impressive 12% over the past three years, it’s clear that there’s potential for even greater expansion, particularly when compared to a nationwide decline in similar sectors.
Kamineni, the former CEO of MI2, had a vision for promoting innovation and education to cultivate growth within this industry. It seems that Buckentin is keen to carry that torch forward, especially when it comes to inspiring the next generation. MI2 is working on partnerships with local universities and schools to spark interest in metalwork among young people. This initiative aims to not only secure a future workforce but also to create opportunities for smaller businesses to flourish as part of its expanded membership.
MI2 is gearing up for some exciting outreach initiatives across the state. One of the main highlights is the upcoming Kentucky Industry Conference, slated for October 2025. In collaboration with the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers and the University of Louisville Manufacturing Extension Program, this event promises to bring together key players from the industry for networking and discussions on the future of metals in Kentucky.
And it seems like there’s no sign of slowing down in the manufacturing scene. Governor Andy Beshear recently announced some big news regarding local developments. PEAK Precision Manufacturing is set to open a brand new facility in Bowling Green, investing a cool $3 million and creating 24 new jobs in the process. Additionally, Vista Metals is planning a splashy entrance into the local market with a new specialty aluminum products operation. This ambitious project comes with a $60 million investment and is expected to generate over 50 jobs. Their expansive facility, covering more than 75,000 square feet, will boost capabilities in aerospace and industrial components, adding even more momentum to Kentucky’s growing metals industry.
To further sweeten the pot, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) has greenlit some enticing tax incentives for Vista Metals, potentially offering up to $2.5 million. This move underpins the ongoing commitment to support businesses that not only invest Genthis but also generate much-needed job opportunities in the region.
With Buckentin’s extensive background and the ongoing expansion within Kentucky’s manufacturing landscape, it looks like the state is poised for exciting advancements and innovations in the metals industry. As MI2 moves forward under new leadership, the future appears bright, ensuring that Kentucky remains a competitive force in the metals arena and a destination for innovation.
