Exciting Times for Women’s Volleyball: NCAA Division I Championship Bracket Announced

Indianapolis has turned into a buzzing hub for volleyball fans as the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball committee officially announced the 64-team field for the much-anticipated 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. This thrilling tournament will showcase the nation’s top talent and fierce competition set to kick off in early December.

Automatic Qualifiers and At-Large Selections

In an exciting format, the championship features 31 conferences that earned an automatic qualification into the tournament. The remaining 33 spots were filled by at-large selections, ensuring a diverse and competitive bracket. Among the celebrated teams, we see powerhouse schools like Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Louisville, and Penn State claiming the top four seeds. The prestige of these teams is significant, with a combined total of 12 national titles throughout the tournament’s history!

Top Teams in the Spotlight

Pittsburgh, boasting an impressive season finish with a record of 29-1, also celebrated its third consecutive ACC Championship. Not far behind, Nebraska and Penn State both claimed a share of the Big Ten Conference title, with striking 19-1 conference records and overall season records of 29-2. Louisville, with its season record of 25-5, also made a remarkable mark this year!

If you’re eagerly waiting for the matches, rest assured that the top 32 teams have been carefully seeded nationally in pods of four, aligned in four regions. The top seeds will enjoy the honor of hosting games at their respective campuses, creating a home-court advantage!

Team Representation and Historic Participation

The Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, and Southeastern Conferences topped the list, having nine teams each selected to compete in the championship tournament. Following them, Big 12 placed six programs into the postseason showdown. Excitingly, this year’s roster includes 39 teams that participated in the 2023 championship, with teams like Chicago State and UTEP making their tournament debut! Meanwhile, UT Arlington is making a long-awaited return after a hiatus since 2002.

It’s worth highlighting that Penn State has held a remarkable position as the only team to have participated in every single one of the 44 championship tournaments. Just a heartbeat away are Nebraska and Stanford, who have only missed one tournament in their storied histories.

Championship History Shines Through

As we look back on the past 41 years of the championship, 12 schools have claimed national titles, with nine of those schools making an appearance in this year’s tournament. Notable previous winners in the field include Hawaii, Kentucky, Nebraska, Southern California, Stanford, Penn State, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin. Each of these teams has a glorious legacy, and it’s sure to spice up the upcoming matches!

What’s Next? The Road to Louisville

The championship bracket is set, and the excitement continues to build! First- and second-round matches are scheduled to take place from December 5-7 at various campus sites. Teams that emerge victorious will move onward to regional play from December 12-15.

The regional competition will unfold at four undisclosed campus sites, which will be revealed on December 8. From there, four teams will clash in single-elimination regional semifinals, with the ultimate regional winners earning a coveted spot in the national semifinals and final championship, to be held at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville on December 19 & 22.

Mark Your Calendars!

The thrilling national semifinal matches will broadcast live on ESPN starting at 6:30 p.m. ET, leading up to the crowning championship match on ABC at 3 p.m. ET.
