Indianapolis is buzzing with excitement as the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball committee has just unveiled the 64-team bracket for the highly anticipated 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. This year’s tournament will showcase some of the most talented teams in the nation, all vying for glory and a shot at lifting the championship trophy.
This year, the top seeds have already made a splash in the volleyball community, with Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Louisville, and Penn State earning the prestigious honor of being the top four seeds in the tournament. Together, these powerhouse teams boast an impressive 12 national titles among them. Pittsburgh leads the pack as it finished the season with a remarkable record of 29-1, while also clinching its third consecutive ACC Championship. Not to be outdone, both Nebraska and Penn State shared the Big Ten Conference title with stellar records of 19-1 and 29-2 overall. Louisville rounded out the top seeds with a solid 25-5 record this season.
For the third consecutive year, teams will be seeded into groups of four, called pods, and then assigned to four different regions. The NCAA has made it a priority for the top seeds to host, creating an exhilarating atmosphere for fans and players alike. Interesting pairings also come into play, as seeds are matched according to their rankings (ones with eights, twos with sevens, and so on) while keeping conference rivalries in check during the initial rounds.
This year’s tournament features a whopping number of participants from three of the strongest conferences: the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, and Southeastern conferences have each sent nine teams to the championship, leading the way for conference representation. Following closely behind, the Big 12 has six teams making the cut for the postseason.
Mark your calendars! The first- and second-round matches are set to take place from December 5-7 at 16 different campus locations. Teams that emerge victorious will advance to the regional playoffs scheduled for December 12-15. The regional matchups will be held at four sites yet to be announced on December 8, promising an exhilarating week of volleyball action.
The grand finale will take place at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, where the University of Louisville, in partnership with the Louisville Sports Commission, will host the national semifinals on December 19 and the championship match on December 22. Fans can catch the semifinals on ESPN starting at 6:30 p.m. ET, while the championship match will air on ABC at 3 p.m. ET.
With so much talent and history on the line, the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship is gearing up to be an unforgettable event for players and fans alike! Get ready to cheer on your favorite teams!
