Bowling Green’s Oldest Business, Morris Jewelry, Marks Its 143rd Year
In Bowling Green, at the heart of Fountain Square and Main Avenue, stands a treasure that has seen numerous milestones and persevered against the passing of time. That treasure is none other than Morris Jewelry, the oldest functioning small business in the city, and this year, it celebrates its 143rd anniversary.
A Storied History that Transcends Time
Established in 1881 by German immigrant Frank Maier, Morris Jewelry began its tenure as Frank Maier Jewelry. This was a period when the Civil War had ended a mere 16 years before, and bank robber Jesse James was still firmly in his criminal prime. The edifice housing the jewelry store was developed even earlier, around 1850, featuring a unique limestone foundation, likely sourced locally, and the intrigue of hand-hewn floor joists.
A century later, in 1910, a pivotal handover of ownership led to the renaming of the store to its current name, Morris Jewelry, with the business guided by the able hands of Robert Morris until 1956.
New Owners, Same Tradition
The torch was passed to Bob and Lillian Kyle after Robert Morris’ stint, with the couple maintaining the age-old Morris traditions and fidelity to top-tier jewelry. It was during their tenure that the revolutionary princess cut diamond was invented. The couple witnessed significant developments in Bowling Green, such as the birth of the city’s first shopping mall, Greenwood Mall, and a city-wide shift in business and development away from Downtown.
In 1991, the store yet again changed hands with Charles and Robbin Collins assuming control, steering the store successfully into the new millennium before transfering its custodianship to the Barrons – Michael and Sharon, in 2006. The Barron’s were instrumental in spurring a renewal in the Downtown community through their revitalization efforts.

Morris Jewelry is now owned by Jim and Samantha Steen who, since 2013, have not only continued to honor and uphold the Morris tradition and dedication to service, but have also been steadfast advocates for the ongoing Downtown renaissance. They encourage their team to not only sell, but to also forge memorable stories and connections with the Bowling Green community.

A Celebrated Institution
Having served Bowling Green and curated Downtown memories since 1881, Morris Jewelry has been consistently voted as the Best Jewelry Store in successive annual contests for the last 14 years. More than a jewelry store, the establishment serves as a keeper of downtown histories and legends, having witnessed and endured nearly 150 years of Bowling Green’s evolution.
As it celebrates its 143rd birthday this year, Morris Jewelry remains a testament to endurance, dedication, and the charm of local businesses that form the heartbeat of the Bowling Green community.
