Michael Delaney, Bowling Green’s Police Chief, Announced President of KACP

Last week in Bowling Green, a major announcement grabbed the attention of Kentucky’s law enforcement community. The yearly meet of the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP) played host to the news that BGPD’s own, Chief Michael Delaney, is now the president of this respected organization.

Chief Delaney, in his address after the announcement, outlined his key focus areas for his tenure. Mental health for law enforcement officers emerged as a significant priority for the newly-appointed president.

“In law enforcement, our officers are subjected to some tough and often traumatising situations. It’s past time that we openly address mental health,” Delaney stated. He added, “A happy and healthy workforce not only enriches the department; its members also become ambassadors, encouraging others to join and reassuring the community of our commitment to their well-being.”

The KACP, for the uninitiated, is a cooperative assembly of law enforcement leaders across Kentucky. The association strives to amplify the voices of these leaders and campaigns for police-related legislative matters.

Delaney hailed the platform provided by the KACP, “This organization allows us to address issues that local police encounter, and provide a collective voice in Frankfort to help resolve these concerns.”

But this isn’t all that Delaney has set his sights on. Staffing woes, a concern echoed by several other agencies throughout the state, is something that Delaney plans to work on during his presidency.

Let’s hope under Chief Delaney’s presidency, constructive steps are taken to improve the welfare of Kentucky’s law enforcement officers and evolve the current policing practices for the better.
