On the morning of Wednesday, October 16, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Simpson County, Mississippi. A bridge over the Strong River on State Route 149 collapsed while a work crew was preparing it for demolition. The bridge had been closed to traffic since September 18 as part of a bridge replacement project, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT).
Early reports indicate that three workers were killed, and four others sustained serious injuries during the incident. Governor Tate Reeves took to social media later in the day to confirm the news, stating that first responders from the county, along with other state resources, were present at the scene of the collapse to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
According to Simpson County Sheriff Paul Mullins, at the time of the collapse, seven men were working on the bridge. They were using heavy machinery as part of the demolition process when the structure gave way. The bridge fell nearly 40 feet (about 12 meters), leading to a devastating situation for those present.
Terry Tutor, the Simpson County coroner, echoed Sheriff Mullins’s information, confirming that three individuals had died and four were critically injured. The conditions of the injured workers are currently unknown as authorities continue their investigations and response efforts. Both Sheriff Mullins and Coroner Tutor have not responded to further inquiries as of the evening of the incident.
In an official statement, a spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Transportation, Anna Ehrgott, noted that one of their inspectors was at the work site at the time of the incident, thankfully escaping unharmed. She added that MDOT would provide more information as it becomes available, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg addressed the issue later in the day through a social media post. He stated that the Federal Highway Administration was actively engaging with state officials regarding the premature collapse of the bridge during the demolition process.
This incident adds to growing concerns around the safety and condition of bridges across the country. As inspections and maintenance programs become increasingly crucial, incidents like these serve as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers faced by construction workers and the importance of ensuring structural integrity in ongoing projects.
This bridge was an important roadway in the area, serving as a vital connection for residents and businesses alike. The collapse has raised questions and concerns among local residents about the future of transportation in the area. Many community members are now anxiously waiting for updates regarding the recovery process and insights into safety measures being taken moving forward.
Local law enforcement, fire department, and emergency management agencies have been working tirelessly at the site to ensure that all necessary measures are being taken to support those affected and to secure the area for further investigation.
As the investigation continues, the community of Mendenhall and the surrounding areas come together to mourn the loss of life and support the injured workers and their families. The state is committed to finding answers regarding this tragic event and ensuring safety in all ongoing and future construction projects.
The Mendenhall bridge collapse is a stark reminder of the dangers present in construction and infrastructure work. As the situation develops, residents are hopeful for answers and an improved commitment to safety standards in Mississippi and beyond.
