A Day of Grit and Honor: Memorial Day Murph at Crossfit Old School, Bowling Green
The Unique Tribute in the Form of a Workout
On Memorial Day, a unique and remarkable tribute took place at the Crossfit Old School in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A demanding workout routine unfolded, an exercise marathon covering miles of running, hundreds of squats, pull-ups, and push-ups. This strenuous event was dedicated to honor and remember the late Lieutenant Michael Murphy.
Documenting the events was Erin Richter, Crossfit Old School’s coach and proud owner, who said, “It was never meant to be Memorial Day, Murph. The family approached CrossFit to put this workout together. As the years have gone by, it organically turned into a yearly Memorial Day event.”
A Unifying Event Amidst Trying Times
Beyond the physicality of it, this event touches upon community spirit and unity at a time when the country is undergoing various challenges. It is a sentiment echoed by one of the attendees, Michael Thurman, who came to support his grandson’s participation. He believes that such events are critical in bringing people together, setting aside differences, and unitifying individuals in celebration.
Richter added her perspective on the event’s significance, emphasizing the importance of remembering those who were lost, “It doesn’t need to be a tragedy for our world to come together. We need to remember that it’s because of our brave soldiers and we should come together, not just after unfortunate events.”
Promoting Unity Beyond Crossfit
While Crossfit has been the catalyst for this tribute workout, the event has grown beyond the brand. Erin adds, “It’s not just Crossfit anymore that does this. So many other gyms, and that’s what it’s all about. It’s not Crossfit. It’s about honoring.”
Overall, the day winds down leaving marks of sweat and determination on the gym floor, a silent testimony to the tribute paid to Lieutenant Michael Murphy, and a reminder of unity in trying times.
