LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Derby City is buzzing with excitement as the beloved musical, “Mama Mia!”, returns for an enchanting week of performances. This iconic show has been capturing hearts for decades, and now it’s gracing the stage at the Kentucky Center as part of the PNC Broadway in Louisville season.
This time, the spotlight shines on a familiar face to many in the area—Amy Weaver, a proud graduate of Western Kentucky University (WKU). She steps into the role of “Sophie,” bringing her talents and charm to the stage. It’s a thrilling moment for Weaver, who has journeyed from her hometown of Saint Petersburg, Florida to making her mark on Broadway.
Amy isn’t just dancing her heart out for the role; she also shares a deep connection to the local community. “My one entire side of the family is from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, so that was also a big draw for being here,” she shared with a warm smile. “I got to see all my cousins, my aunts, and my uncles, and everybody else that doesn’t live in Florida, which happens to be just me and my own family.”
Reflecting on her time at WKU, Weaver described her experience as a pivotal moment in her artistic journey. “It was really wonderful, it was such a great experience for me,” she recalled. “I loved the campus; it was kind of the perfect size. It wasn’t too big, it wasn’t too small. And I liked being in Kentucky, I liked the landscape; I wasn’t necessarily ready to be in a big city yet, so it was the perfect transition for me from home to the big city.” There’s something truly special about the connections we make along the way!
For those who wish to witness Weaver’s enchanting portrayal of Sophie, you’ll have the chance to catch her in “Mama Mia!” throughout the rest of the week. Whether you’re already a fan of the musical or are experiencing its charm for the first time, it promises to be a delightful evening filled with catchy tunes and heartfelt moments!
